Recommendation:
THAT, pursuant to section 90 of the Community Charter, this portion of the meeting be
closed to the public as the subject matter being considered relates to the following:
90(1)(a) – personal information about an identifiable individual who holds or is being
considered for a position as an officer, employee or agent of the municipality or another
position appointed by the municipality.

The Minutes of the Regular Community Heritage Commission Meeting held via Zoom teleconference and
hosted in the Blaney Room at Maple Ridge City Hall on September 14, 2023 at 7:00 pm.

THAT, the agenda for the September 14, 2023 Community Heritage Commission Regular
Meeting be adopted as amended to add “5.3 Maple Ridge 150”.

3. ADOPTION OF MINUTES

THAT, the minutes for the June 8, 2023 Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting be
adopted.

4. DELEGATIONS
Don Luxton provided an overview of the draft Heritage Plan, which is strategic document
intended to guide the next ten years of heritage conservation in the City of Maple Ridge.

5. NEW AND UNFINISHED BUSINESS
5.1. Review Draft Heritage Plan
The Commission members asked questions about the draft Heritage Plan to the delegation, Don
Luxton, and discussed topics such as the Community Heritage Commission website content, the
preservation of historical sites, and heritage facilities in the City of Maple Ridge.
The Commission members requested more time to review the draft Heritage Plan. On October 6,
2023, the Commission passed a motion of endorsement.

THAT, the Community Heritage Commission endorse the draft Heritage Plan 2024-2034 and be
forwarded to Council for consideration.

5.2. Planning Heritage Awards
K. Gowan provided an update on event planning for the 2024 Heritage Awards, including the
venue, catering, and entertainment. The Commission members discussed the names of award
categories.

THAT, the History Hero Award be renamed to the Bernice Gehring History Hero Award for the
annual Heritage Awards.

5.3 Maple Ridge 150
R. Dunning discussed potential heritage and cultural festivities for Maple Ridge 150 and
opportunities to support local community organizations that are running events.
6. LIASION UPDATES
6.1. Maple Ridge Historical Society
J. Koehn provided an update on the Maple Ridge Historical Society events and campaigns.
6.2. Council Liaison
Councillor Dueck provided an update on Council strategic planning and recent press releases.
6.3. Staff Liaison
K. Gowan provided an update on tax exemptions and heritage designations for local heritage
properties that were forwarded to public hearing.
