City of Maple Ridge Social Policy Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes February 1, 2023 The Minutes of the Regular Social Policy Advisory Committee Meeting held via Zoom teleconference and hosted in the Blaney Room at Maple Ridge City Hall on February 1, 2023 at 6:00 pm. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 3.ADOPTION OF THE MINUTES R/2023-SPAC-002 It was moved and seconded That the minutes of the Social Policy Advisory Committee meeting dated September 7, 2022 be adopted as circulated. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 4.NEW AND UNFINISHED BUSINESS 4.1. Advisory Committee Overview A. Dhillon, Committee Clerk, provided a general overview of Committee proceedings and functions. T. Cotroneo, Staff Liaison, described the mandate and ongoing work of the Social Policy Advisory Committee. 4.3. Chair and Vice Chair Selections The Social Policy Advisory Committee appointed Gabe Liosis as Chair and Ana Sanchez as Chair Vice for 2023. R/2023-SPAC-003 It was moved and seconded That Gabe Liosis be appointed as Chair of the Social Policy Advisory Committee for 2023. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY R/2023-SPAC-004 It was moved and seconded That Ana Sanchez be appointed as Vice Chair of the Social Policy Advisory Committee for 2023. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY R/2023-SPAC-005 It was moved and seconded That the ballots used during the Chair and Vice Chair selection process be destroyed. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 4.4. 2023 Meeting Schedule The Social Policy Advisory Committee adopted a 2023 meeting schedule. R/2023-SPAC-006 It was moved and seconded That the 2023 Social Policy Advisory Committee meeting schedule be adopted as circulated. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 4.5. 2023 Draft Work Plan The Social Policy Advisory Committee approved the 2023 Social Policy Advisory Committee Work Plan and forwarded the recommendations to Council for approval. R/2023-SPAC-007 It was moved and seconded That the 2023 Social Policy Advisory Committee Work Plan be approved and forwarded to Council for approval. SD42 Student Charity Event – Kim Darnold Kim Darnold presented on their Creative, Action, and Service (CAS) project regarding a hygiene clothing fundraiser. Topics included: raising awareness for homelessness, promoting wellbeing in the community, hygiene product collection methods, and sponsorship. Committee members engaged in discussion, provided feedback and recommendations, and discussed next steps for the initiative. Note: J. Tan left the meeting at 7:15 pm Note: J. Tan joined the meeting at 7:18 pm 6. LIAISON UPDATES 6.1. Staff Liaison Stephane Labonne and Tony Cotroneo provided an update on the following: • PRC Master Plan draft feedback from the Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee and then forwarded to Council for approval • Launch of Engage Maple Ridge • Placemaking initiative to promote neighbourhood level events. The downtown core is the pilot project. • Community engagement at the Albion Community Centre 6.2. Council Liaison Councillor Dozie and Councillor Tan provided an update on the Youth Planning Table and Council Strategic Planning and mandate. 7. TASK FORCE UPDATE – NIL 8. QUESTION PERIOD FOR THE PUBLIC Cheryl Young, Acting Fraser Health Officer, provided an overview of Health Canada’s exemption granted from the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act to the Province of British Columbia effective January 31, 2023. Ms. Young asked if the City of Maple Ridge will be implementing policy changes for the decriminalization of people who use drugs in the municipality. 9. ROUNDTABLE Committee members provided updates and reports on relevant events, activities and social policy topics. Social Policy Advisory Committee Minutes February 1, 2023 Page 4 of 4 9.1. Youth Strategy Rose Dallasheh provided an update on the funding approval for the Youth Planning Table for 2023 by City Council and the youth engagement survey, timelines, and goals. 9.2. Community Action Team (CAT) – NIL 9.3. Community Network Ana Sanchez provided an update on the following: •The formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Circle, a group of Community Network members meeting in person to learn about Truth and Reconciliation, local Katzie History, decolonizing practices, and indigenizing work •Collaborating with numerous community service agencies and nonprofits to host the Together We Stand - National Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30, 2023 •Collaborating to create the Katzie Learning Event on September 26, 2023 with 60 spaces at the Albion Community Centre •Engagement from the weekly distribution of a newsletter to support communication of Community Network members, events and activities •Hosting two social events in July 2023 and December 2023 to promote positive relationship development between Community Network members •Maple Ridge Community Foundation’s first annual Dancing in the Ridge, proceeds are going towards the sustainability of the Community Chest Initiative •Annual report will be provided to the City of Maple Ridge regarding the ongoing work and goals of the Community Network 10.ADJOURNMENT – 7:56 pm Arsh Dhillon, Acting Chair Gabe Liosis, Chair /ad
