The Commission discussed fundraising and bringing heritage awareness to the community.Nicole Read noted that there is a certain group of people interested in heritage and then another group that don’t see the relevance;any kind of fundraiser that is fun and can bring the two together would be beneficial to the heritage community. 3.2 Community Awareness and Involvement Jacqueline Mulcahy noted that part of the problem is that there’s a whole population that is not connected through architecture or use of space so it’s difficult to pitch a particular perspective.Ms.Mulcahy also talked about the corner on 216th and River Road;all the homes are stucco;open ditches, and there’s a paradox about the tale that we’re trying to get people to tell.Look at this space am I seeing a particular view or this sort of 60’s suburban space,as much as there might be flaws, the fact that it doesn’t get mentioned is problematic.People are not engaging in it (history, our town).Maybe some way we could take a leap for these people that we’re missing, Helmi Braches talked about how natural heritage is important in Maple Ridge, not only owning houses, somehow we must define as the package of Maple Ridge Heritage.Ms.Braches noted that this is what the context study is trying to do. Lisa Zosiak noted that the public did come out to the Context Study open house and talked about the reasons why they want to live here including the rural environment. The Commission discussed how to incorporate historical events that happened at specific locations and how to market these to the community along with how urban design has changed the face of historical character within our community. Lisa Zosiak noted that Area Plans are starting to be created.Ms.Zosiak noted that from the residents that participated in the open houses (with regards to why people live in Maple Ridge)the comments staff received included;for the landscape, the nature, and it’s what people can afford. More fundraising ideas included: Sports heritage; how can we acknowledge this? Why are people coming here from the other side of the bridge;for the green space; trails, dykes, parks, up the mountains. Community Heritage Commission Special Meeting Minutes – Tuesday, January 27, 2010 DRAF T MINUTES Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting Page 4 of 4 Acknowledge the equestrian community. Include information in the Welcome Wagon package that new residents receive. Create relationships with prominent realtors within the community. Create a passport for the ghost tour;hand in stamped passport for a draw prize. Context Study;public document;could we include some sort of passport on this document? Fundraising sub-committee will include Jacqueline Mulcahy,Helmi Braches, and Nicole Read. Work with the Parks Department with materials they already have. Passport slides in nicely with the welcome wagon, however we don’t want to get too many layers of bureaucracy involved, some of thespecial places within maple ridge, direct them to the context study and tidbits about place you might want to visit;send it back in to Lisa Zosiak for a prize. Heritage Awards the prize is awarded. Get your picture taken with the Mayor. Lisa Zosiak will organize a meeting with the sub-committee. 3.3 Facebook Tutorial This item was deferred to the February agenda. 4.Next Meetin g: Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Agenda deadline : Monday, January 18, 2010 5.Adjournment -8:06 p.m. ___________________________ Chairperson /tc
