Ms.Zosiak distributed information on the Creative Communities Program to the Commission members.Lynne Probyn agreed to find out more information on this grant and report back to the Commission.A sub-committee was formed including; Lynne Probyn, Jacqueline Mulcahy and Lisa Zosiak. 5.2 2010 CHC Budget & Workplan Review Lisa Zosiak reviewed the 2010 Budget and Workplan with the Commission.The Commission discussed different options for distributing the Community Heritage Newsletter. Michael Cook distributed information on the Hammond Heritage Walkabout that took place in 1993.Lisa Zosiak noted that this is a great idea and if the Commission wanted to hold the tour in 2011 it would be a good idea to start the planning process now.A sub-committee was formed including Michael Cook and Lynne Probyn. Ms.Zosiak noted that she will send out a letter to interested parties requesting ghost stories that can be included on the Ghost Tour later this fall.Jacqueline Mulcahy will talk to David Brooks with regards to the Oakalla Prison ghost stories. Jacqueline Mulcahy agreed to put together information for a booth at the Home Show,providing that the Commission can get a reduced rate for a booth.Ms. Zosiak will inquire as to the cost of a booth at the Home Show and if it’s not feasible for this year the Commission agreed to participate in the 2011 Home Show. ACTION ITEM:Add Community Heritage Commission Newsletter distribution to the April agenda. 5.3 Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair - 2010 Brenda Smith provided information on the Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair that takes place on April 29th in Abbotsford at the University of Fraser Valley.Ms. Smith noted that Committee members may volunteer as judges for this event. Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting Minutes – Tuesday, March 2, 2010 Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting Page 3 of 4 Brenda Smith advised the Commission that it would be beneficial to partner with the School District to provide classroom and communication support. ACTION ITEM:Brenda Smith will extend an invitation Mary Campone to attend a future meeting to discuss the idea of Maple Ridge schools participating in the annual BC Heritage fair event. 5.4 Miller Residence Heritage Revitalization Agreement Lisa Zosiak provided an update on the Heritage Revitalization Agreement for the Miller Residence.Ms.Zosiak reviewed the legislation on heritage exemption with the Commission members and noted that other municipalities have created policies to set criteria for this,but Maple Ridge currently doesn’t have such a policy. Lisa Zosiak provided an update on the Daykin/Beeton House Heritage Revitalization Agreement.The Commission agreed that they would like to learn what creating a tax exemption policy would entail.Lisa Zosiak noted that a tax exemption policy and a Heritage Revitalization Agreement are two separate heritage conservation tools. ACTION ITEM:Staff Liaison to send information to Commission members regarding those municipalities/cities that have Tax Exemption Policies. 6.Sub-Committee Reports 6.1 Newsletter Helmi Braches advised the Commission that we are one issue behind;and requested a short bio from Brenda Smith and will include a report from the Heritage Awards.Lisa Zosiak will provide a write up of the Miller Residence for the next edition. 6.2 Heritage Awards – review of the awards The Commission reviewed the Heritage Awards event;over 50 people attended and it was a big success.Everyone seemed to have a great time and the Lava Lights Jazz ensemble was excellent. 6.3 Heritage Context Study, update Lisa Zosiak provided an update on the Heritage Context Study. 6.4 Heritage Plaque Program Lynne Probyn provided an update on the Heritage Plaque Program.The Commission agreed to provide Heritage Plaques for those buildings that have received a municipal heritage designation but have not yet received a plaque. Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting Minutes – Tuesday, March 2, 2010 Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting Page 4 of 4 Ms.Probyn noted that this would entail contacting the heritage house owners to see if they would like their homes to be plaqued. 6.5 CHC Facebook Page – deferred to the April meeting. 6.6 Newspaper Articles Michael Cook advised the Commission that there was a great article on the Heritage Awards in The Times.Discussion ensued on the article that Jim Connor wrote for the newspaper, but was never published. ACTION ITEM:Committee Clerk to email Sheila Nichols requesting copies of the articles that Jim Connor wrote and then forward them on to Jacqueline Mulcahy for reference. 6.6 Street Naming Lisa Zosiak advised the Commission that she has been working with the Engineering Department on a Pedestrian Way Finding on a small portion of the town centre (Lougheed Hwy between 223rd and 227th and up 224th between Lougheed and Dewdney Trunk Road)and noted there might be an opportunity to include the original street names in this project. Jacqueline Mulcahy would like the Commission to consider incorporating Veterans in street naming and provided an example to the Commission. 7.Correspondence 8.Next Meetin g: Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Agenda deadline : Monday, March 22, 2010 19.Adjournment -9:34 p.m. ___________________________ Chairperson /tc
