Minutes of February 7, 2012 Regular Meeting be adopted.

That the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of February 7, 2012 be adopted.

4. Delegations
4.1 Fred Armstrong -Municipal Communication
Fred Armstrong, Manager of Corporate Communications reviewed the current
corporate communications policy along with strategies to assist the Commission in
creating an awareness of their work. Mr. Armstrong reviewed the different types of
communications (www.mapleridge.ca, Maple Ridge This Month, Your Maple Ridge
Facebook Page, Twitter accounts, etc.) that are currently being used by the District of
Maple Ridge.
Fred Armstrong shared ideas on how the Communications Department can work to
support the Commission;
• Create a Facebook photo archive for the Heritage Inventory
• Post information for upcoming events on the District's Facebook page
The Commission went on to discuss the vision for a new museum and an update was
provided on the current proposed location along with the logistics of the new site.
Craig Speirs advised that the Commission should work on a media plan for the year
that would be forwarded to the Communications Department.
Fred Armstrong advised the Commission to create some short term and long term
goals along with a priority list of things or events that you would like the community to
know about.
5. New & Unfinished Business
5.1 CHC Member Roundtab/e -Discussion on Priorities
The Commission discussed the following priorities for the Commission:
• Kindergarten to Grade 12 -historical educational focus
• A field trip to explore the current heritage inventory
• Patriotic Competition to fly the Canadian Flag within our community
• Promote Heritage to people who are new to the community.
• Support the expansion of the contract to add a program staff person for the
Historical Society

ACTION ITEM: Add "Commission Priorities" to a future agenda
5.2 Future Museum Strategy
The Commission discussed the need for a new museum and the issue of design and
construction costs. The limitations of the existing museum site were discussion,
along with the location of the new museum site purchased by the municipality some
years ago.
ACTION ITEMS: Strike a sub-committee that includes the Historical Society, a
council member and a member of this commission.
Faye Isaac will work with staff to arrange a meeting with Val
Patenaude, Director of the Maple Ridge Museum.
Brenda Smith noted that the Historical Society's Annual General Meeting is on
Thursday, March 22nd_
5.3 Cemetery Tour -deferred to the next meeting.
5.4 CHC Information Pamphlet
Lisa Zosiak reported that the pamphlet will be available next month.
5.5 Educational Action Plan
Brenda Smith advised that she met with the Township of Langley's Community
Heritage Commission and noted that they requested to meet with us to review how
we run things.
It was moved and seconded
That a meeting be arranged between the Maple Ridge Community Heritage
Commission and the Township of Langley's Community Heritage Commission.
And that Faye Isaac work with Staff to arrange a meeting with the Maple Ridge
Historical Society.

5.6 Heritage Revitalization Agreements
Lisa Zosiak provided an update on the two heritage revitalization agreement
applications that are currently being worked on .
Lisa Zosiak distributed the draft Heritage Procedures Bylaw and asked the
commission members to review and provide feedback directly to her. Ms. Zosiak
advised that she will email this document to all members of the Commission.

5. 7 2012 CHG Business Plan Presentation to Council
April 24th was selected as the date for the CHC's presentation to Council. All
members are encouraged to attend as a delegation. It will be an update on the 2012
business plan and Craig, the Chair, has agreed to speak on behalf of the group.
5.8 Hammond Neighbourhood Group
Cyndy Johnson-McCormick advised that there is a new Hammond group being
formed, which was inspired by the Jim Diers presentation. Ms. Johnson-McCormick
noted that this group is really interested in the heritage of the area and they are
working together on events that will bring the community together.
Craig Speirs advised that the Commission should extend an invitation to this group to
attend a future meeting.
6. Sub-Committee Reports
6.1 Newsletter
Craig Speirs, Mandeep Bhuller and Cyndy Johnson-McCormick volunteered to be on
the sub-committee to create a seasonal newsletter. Lisa Zosiak advised that
previous issues of the the newsletter are available on our municipal website.
6.2 Heritage Awards 2012
The Commission discussed the Heritage Awards event that took place on February
22nd, 2012.
6.3 Heritage Plaque Program
The Commission discussed possible plaque projects for 2012 and the possibility of a
plaque for Merkley Park.
Fred Armstrong advised the Commission that there is a new park on 222nd that has
been named Nokai Park and this commission might be able to work with Parks staff
on a heritage parks tour.
Please note that Mandeep Bhuller left the meeting at 9:00 p.m.

6.4 Maple Ridge Historical Society update
Faye Isaac noted that the Annual General Meeting will be held at St. Andrew's United
Church at 7:00 p.m. on March 22nd.
Ms. Isaac also noted that the Senior's Heritage Tea will be held on April 14th between
1:00 -4:00 p.m. at the Senior's Centre on 224th Street and the cost to attend is
$7.00.
Faye Isaac noted that the storage has been moved out of the Maple Ridge Teacher's
Association (MRTA) storage to a new space at the Mayfair and noted that the cost
has risen.
6.5 Council Liaison Update
Councillor Masse noted that there are going to be some changes with a new building
going in on 206t and 112th and noted that the people of Hammond should keep their
eye on the news and keep in touch with Council.
