5. New & Unfinished Business
5.1 Cemetery Tour -Michael Cook-deferred
Cyndy Johnson-McCormick reported speaking with a cemetery caretaker from Port
Hammond who offers cemetery tours. Ms. Johnson-McCormick suggested the
committee contact this caretaker.
Action Item: Brenda Smith will contact the above-noted caretaker regarding a
cemetery tour.
5.2 Heritage Revitalization Agreements Update -Lisa
No updates.
5.3 Port Hammond 130th Birthday-CHC Contribution
Cyndy Johnson-McCormick reported that the Port Hammond 130th celebration will
take place August 17, 2013 between 12:00-4:00 pm at the Hammond Community
Centre. Ms. Johnson-McCormick also reported that Bernice Gehring will be guiding a
heritage walking tour for this celebration.
Craig Speirs reported that the Hammond Mill is interested in the birthday celebration
and may be able to offer tours of the mill.
5.4 CHC Membership -Craig
Craig Speirs welcomed new member Steve Ranta to the Community Heritage
Commission.

Lisa Zosiak reported the Heritage Questionnaire did not make it to the Home Show,
however they did have success with the questionnaire at the Farmers Market on
Earth Day.
Craig Speirs reported the Community Heritage Commission will have a booth manned
by Mr. Speirs and Ms. Johnson-McCormick at the upcoming Haney Farmers Market
on May 25th to promote the heritage questionnaire.
Lisa Zosiak reported that Don Lu xton will be presenting the Heritage Plan at the
Maple Ridge Council meeting on May 28.
6.2 Newsletter

Committee members agreed that Craig Speirs would compose an article on the
Hammond birthday celebration for inclusion in the upcoming newsletter along with a
"Meet our New Commissionaires" article. Ms. Smith will work on an article regarding
the open house.
Action Item: Craig Speirs and Brenda Smith are to work on articles for the upcoming
newsletter.
Heritage Awards 2013
Committee members discussed that a long range plan should be formulated to
recognise community associations' milestone anniversaries. Mr. Speirs noted that
Val Patenaude has compiled a report of neighbourhoods and their milestone
anniversaries. Ms. Johnson-McCormick suggested this report be used to compile a
list of celebrations for next years award recipients.
Action Item: Craig Speirs will follow up with Val Patenaude for a copy of this report.

That the Community Heritage Commission form a sub committee to address Heritage
Awards.

6.4 Heritage Plaque Program
Craig Speirs recognized that Cyndy Johnson-McCormick is compiling a list of current
heritage plaques in our community.
Action Item: Mr. Speirs will assist Ms. Johnson-McCormick by visiting sites in Ruskin
and Whonnock for inclusion in the heritage plaque program.

Ms. Johnson-McCormick reported having a conversation with an iron worker in Port
Hammond to build the stanchions requested by this committee for the 2 "welcome to
Port Hammond" signs.
It was moved and seconded
That the Community Heritage Commission will proceed with the 2 entrance signs and
one iron stanchion for signage coming into Port Hammond from 203rd street and
Maple Crescent.
CARRIED
Action Item: Lisa Zosiak will inquire with bylaws if there are any restrictions which
should be addressed with design elements of the wrought iron stanchions.
Action Item: Ms. Johnson-McCormick will proceed with ordering the 2 iron stanchions
at the budget established by this committee.
Brenda Smith recommended that Fred Braches be asked to create the wording on
the Hammond Mill information sign.
Action Item: Craig Speirs will meet with the Hammond Mill to clarify the kind of a
plaque to be created for the Hammond Mill information sign.
The committee members agreed that the sub committee for heritage plaques will
investigate other materials available with greater longevity for future plaques.
6.5 Digitization Project
Brenda Smith reported that the provincial archivist is unavailable until June. Ms.
Smith will work on scheduling a time with him to discuss digitization.
Craig Speirs suggested this committee needs to explore what digital services are
available and how we can go about accessing these records.
Note: It was the consensus of the Committee to have a discussion outside the item topic.
Brenda Smith asked what the plans are for the 140th anniversary of the District of
Maple Ridge.
Action Item: Councillor Mike Morden wil l investigate if there are any plans in
progress for the 140th District anniversary and report back to this committee.
6.6 Maple Ridge Historical Society Update
Brenda Smith reported that on April 25th the Historical Society met and chose their
new board. New members include; Erica Williams as president, Faye Isaac as vice-
president, Mike Davies as treasurer and Wendy Cook as secretary.

6. 7 Council Liaison Update
Councillor Morden reported he attended the Heritage Tea.
7. Roundtable
Brenda Smith suggested investigating if there are historic copies of the yellowing pictures of
mayors and councils outside Council Chambers. Ms. Smith feels these pictures should be
placed in the museum.
Ms. Smith suggested that this committee consider hosting the Comrriunity Heritage
Commission Networking Conference in November.
Steve Ranta reported that after attending a MRSS grad reunion meeting it was determined a
time capsule was buried on the school grounds. Ground penetrating radar is being brought in
to determine its location.
