Room,at Maple Ridge Municipal Hall,11995 Haney Place Road, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on

There being a quorum present,the Chair called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m.
2.Adoption of the September 2, 2014 Agenda

4.Delegations
4.1 Robert Prince, Maple Ridge Community Foundation
Robert Prince described work done by the Maple Ridge Community Foundation.He
advised that the Foundation invests the donations it receives and uses the interest
earned to provide grants to local charities. The Foundation also acts as a banking
house for charities who wish to invest their own funds. Working with other charities
aids the Foundation in its networking efforts.
The Foundation is currently working to grow their capital fund and raise their profile
in the community.Mr. Prince is exploring the idea of creating new funds to allow
people to channel their donations to support causes they are interested in (for
example: Arts and Culture, Youth, Sports, Environment). Mr. Prince’s intent is to bring
new members into the donor community.
It was agreed that the Community Heritage Commission and the Maple Ridge
Community Foundation would explore the possibility of working together in the future
(specifically in regards to the Commission’s Heritage Awards).The Chair suggested
the Foundation plan to attend the Intersections event planned for spring 2015.The
Intersections event is a networking opportunity for the District of Maple Ridge
Committees of Council and local community groups.
5.Correspondence -Nil
6.Budget
The Chair reviewed budget items approved at the June 2014 meeting. The Commission
budget meeting will be in October.
7.New & Unfinished Business
7.1 Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel –50th Anniversary
The Chair encouraged all members to attend the Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel’s 50th
Anniversary event on September 14th, 2014.Ms. Smith explained the Chapel also
holds an annual information session on how to establish a legacy and suggested it
may be possible to have the Community Heritage Commission mentioned at this
session.
7.2 Golden Ears Transition Initiative –September 20th
The Community Heritage Commission has been invited to speak at a Golden Ears
Transition Initiative event being held in conjunction with the Farmers Market on
September 20th, 2014. Commission members should plan to stop by between 10:00
a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to speak about Maple Ridge history and explain the work done by
the Community Heritage Commission.The Community Planner will print brochures
for this event.A poster and the brochures will be picked up and brought to the event
by the Chair.
7.3 Business Planning
The Community Planner presented an initial draft of the business plan and asked the
Commission members to review and provide suggested changes and input. The
Community Planner will email the business plan to all Commission members.

Councillor Bob Masse recommended that the Commission include plans for the
future in addition to reporting on achievements from the past.The business plan will
be finalized in October and will inform the new council about the work of the
Community Heritage Commission.
8.Sub-committee Reports
8.1 Communications Sub-committee
8.1.1 Events
The Chair will e-mail an updated calendar to Commission members with a
request that any errors or omissions be reported.
8.1.2 “Heritage Here”Newsletter
The Community Planner reported that a newsletter article has been received from
Craig Speirs. Mr. Speirs will confirm that the article has been reviewed.A firm
deadline of October 6th was set for submissions for the fall newsletter. More
articles are still needed. Faye Isaac offered to submit an article on the recent
Historical Society celebration and book launch by the October 6th deadline.
8.1.3 Brochures
The Chair will send a copy of the most recent version of the Heritage Commission
brochure to the Community Planner so that copies may be printed and
distributed.
8.2 Recognitions Sub-committee
8.2.1 Marker Inventory
An update on the Heritage Markers database is not available. A meeting with
those responsible for heritage markers will be held in late September or early
October.
8.2.2 Heritage Awards
A sub-committee meeting was held on August 6th, 2014 regarding the Heritage
Awards.The Commission is working to advertise the different award categories
and who can be recognized. The District Communications departmen t has
updated social media with information on the awards. No submissions have
been received to date.October 17, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. is the deadline for
Heritage Award submissions. The Commission members were asked to
encourage submissions.
The Community Planner provided Heritage Award Brochures for all members as
well as the Heritage Society.The Heritage Awards event has been tentatively
scheduled for February 19, 2015.

8.3 Project Sub-committee
8.3.1 Digitization
The Chair provided an update on the digitization project and the work being done
by the consultant to date.The project is scheduled for completion in December
2014.
8.3.2 Local Voices
The Local Voices event will be held over four evenings featuring three speakers
each night.Spaces for the event have been booked.The Library is responsible
for booking speakers and making all other arrangements.Some of the
Commission members may be asked to speak.This joint venture will bring
publicity to the Community Heritage Commission and will provide a good
networking opportunity.
9.Liaison Updates
9.1 BC Historical Federation
The Chair reported on the recent Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Historical Writing
awards.The winner was “Forest & Fjord, the History of Belcarra” by Ralph Drew.The
BC Historical Foundation also presented an award to Maple Ridge resident and
Douglas College student Sarah Hardy for her historical essay.

That a note of congratulations for her achievement be sent to Sarah Hardy.

9.2 Heritage BC / BC Heritage Branch –Community Heritage Conference
The Chair explained that additional funds will need to be approved to send a delegate
to the CHC Conference. The total fee per person is $160.The Community Planner
had reviewed the agenda and suggested the Commission consider sending two
delegates.The delegates should plan to attend separate sessions to maximize the
investment.The conference will be held on September 26th and 27th.The
Community Planner will email a reminder regarding this conference to those
Commission members not present.

That up to $320 to allow two delegates to attend the Heritage BC Conference be
authorized.
CARRIED
A member of the Community Heritage Commission is needed to attend the Heritage
BC Annual General Meeting to vote on behalf of the Commission.
9.3 Maple Ridge Historical Society –40th Anniversary Book
Faye Isaac reported that the 40th Anniversary party was a success. Many copies of
“Looking Back –Volume One”by Sheila Nickols’ were sold.
