Community Heritage Commission Meeting Minutes
June 8, 2023
The Minutes of the Regular Community Heritage Commission Meeting held via Zoom teleconference and
hosted in the Blaney Room at Maple Ridge City Hall on June 8, 2023 at 7 :00 pm.

2. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA

5.1. Heritage Vancouver Networking Event Update

M. Cook provided an update on the Heritage Vancouver Fundraiser and Social Event held on April
15, 2023.
5.2. Heritage Plaque and Sign Guidelines Update
K. Gowan, Staff Liaison, and M. Cook provided a brief overview of the Heritage Plaque and Sign
Guidelines. Commission members discussed recent plaque examples, installation price, cost
sharing policies, heritage marker records collection, plaque theft and vandalism.
Note: G. Strang joined the meeting at 7:12 pm.
5.3. Heritage Awards Event Planning
K. Gowan, Staff Liaison, provided an overview of the 2024 Heritage Awards event planning.
Commission members discussed location, venue capacities, event dates, print marketing,
entertainment, and next steps.

That $50 be allocated for Krista Gowan, Staff Liaison, to print post cards advertising for the 2024
Heritage Awards event.

5.4. Maple Ridge's 150th Anniversary Speaker Series Planning
K. Gowan, Staff Liaison, provided an update on the Speaker Series event for the Maple Ridge 150
celebration. Commission members discussed guest speakers, community organizations
engagement, location, and dates. Staff will provide an update at a future meeting.

5.5. Recent Heritage Files Update
5.5.1. 23575 124 Avenue -Heritage Designation & Heritage Tax Exemption Request
K. Gowan, Staff Liaison, provided a summary presentation of the Heritage Designation & Heritage
Tax Exemption Request for property located at 23575 124 Avenue. The heritage value of the
subject property is associated with the early agricultural development of Maple Ridge, the history
of Japanese-Canadian settlement in the area, and for its protected wetland and wildlife habitat.

Exemption Request for property located at 23575 124 Avenue.

5.5.2. 21695 River Road -Heritage Tax Exemption Request
K. Gowan, Staff Liaison, provided a summary presentation of the Heritage Tax Exemption Request
for property located at 21695 River Road. The heritage value of the subject property is associated
with the historic community of The Ridge -named from the collection of maple trees that grew
high above the Fraser River on a ridge between Hammond and Port Haney. As the nearby
commercial centres of Hammond and Port Haney developed, The Ridge slowly developed
between the two as a residential neighbourhood of modest family homes.

That the Community Heritage Commission supports the Heritage Tax Exemption Request for
property located at 21695 River Road.

6.1. Maple Ridge Historical Society -NIL
6.2. Council Liaison
Councillor Dueck provided an update on the following:
• Housing Summit hosted by Mayor and Council held on May 30, 2023.
• Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics BC held on June 1, 2023.
• Economic Development Summit to be hosted by Mayor and Council October 2023.
6.3. Staff Liaison
K. Gowan provided an update on the following:
• BC Heritage Award recipients 2023.
• Demolition of the John Hammond House.

Members discussed relevant community events and initiatives related to community heritage.

The next regular meeting of the Community Heritage Commission will be held on Thursday,
September 14, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.
