REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
The Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Economic Development Committee, held in the
Bridges Boardroom, Economic Development Office, Maple Ridge on Wednesday,
September 5, 2018, at 5:00 pm.

3. Updates on current projects and events

Downtown Enhancement Project: The current phase of the project takes place on
Lougheed Highway, between 224 and 226. Staff from Engineering and Economic
Development and Civic Property is meeting weekly with businesses along the corridor to
provide them with updates on the project and to help alleviate concerns.
Innovation Forum 2019: The 2nd Annual Innovation in Emerging Cities forum is
scheduled to take place on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the ACT Arts Centre. An additional

venue at the Greg Moore Youth Centre may offer a trade show and/or career fair. There
may also be some smaller events taking place in advance of April 2 that will serve as
prequels to the larger Innovation in Emerging Cities event.
The Innovation Task Force, a subgroup of the Economic Development Committee, is
working on the details of the event. The Task Force will soon be seeking sponsors,
panelists and speakers.
Fraser Valley Tech Forum: This forum is put on by SRCTEC and the Economic
Development Department agreed to help promote the event as they will do the same for
our Innovation Forum in April of 2019.
International Parking Day: This is a global initiative to promote re-thinking of public
space. It takes place annually on the third Friday in September. The Planning
Department, together with Economic Development and Parks, Recreation & Culture, will
be working with local businesses along 224 Street to transform parking stalls and
alleyways into mini park-like spaces for an afternoon.
4. Setting direction for EDC (continued from meeting June 27, 2018)
At the meeting on June 27, 2018, the environmental scan indicated three possible
themes.
• The need for post-secondary in Maple Ridge
• Improved relations with industrial area in North East sector of Maple Ridge
• Possible options for the introduction for Cannabis
Another option that came up at current meeting:
• Innovation forum 2019
