HomeMy WebLinkAboutMRPASC 2010-09-08 Minutes.pdf District of Maple Ridge Public Art Steering Committee MINUTES September 8, 2010 Minutes or the meeting of the Maple Ridge Public Art Steering Committee to be held on Wednesday September 8 at 3:00 PM in the Art Gallery at the ACT, 11944 Haney Place, Maple Ridge Present: Susan Hayes (acting chair), Barb Duncan (minutes secretary), Judy Dueck, Gaby Morrison, Lindy Sisson (from approximately 3:30pm) In Attendance: Shelley Jorde (from approximately 3:20pm), Regrets: Brian Shigetomi, Craig Redmond, Kristin Krimmel 100 CALL TO ORDER Sue Hayes as Acting Chair called the meeting to order at 3:10PM 200 APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA The agenda was approved as written. 300 APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF JULY 21, 2010 It was moved and seconded THAT the minutes of the meeting of July 21 2010 be approved as written. CARRIED 400 DEVELOPMENTS SITE AT THE CORNER OF 224TH/LOUGHEED (Barb + Lindy) Barb and Lindy advised the committee of progress to date with discussions with Narland, Westminster Savings, and implicated District staff. 401 Landscape Barb advised that Bruce McLeod had pointed out that landscape plans for the site had already been approved by Council, and any new plan would have to be submitted again. His suggestion was that the developer Narland’s original plan be upheld at least until the artwork was in place, at which time alternate landscaping and plans for its care could be reconsidered. 402 Licensing agreement Barb and Lindy suggested that it would be both prudent and helpful to have the District directly involved in the drafting of the licensing agreement requested by the Narland and Westminster Savings ACTION: Shelley to arrange meeting between Barb, Kelly Swift and herself as an initial step in drafting the agreement. 403 Technical questions Barb advised that it was at times difficult to move forward with projects in light of the many technical questions that arose along the way. ACTION: A technical point person would be appointed at the next meeting. 500 LIONS’ EAGLE – UPDATE Barb advised that Ray Morrissette had responded to the Committee’s offer in writing of $2000 to assist with their campaign to obtain an Eagle for Maple Ridge. In response to his questions, It was pointed out that the funds would be made available only until the end of 2010, and that they would have to be applied to the Eagle that they had sought in the Spring, as this particular sculpture had particular relevance to the District. . He also asked if the committee to increase their commitment as he appeared doubtful the additional funds could be raised at this stage. Motion and seconded THAT the offer of $2000 be re-affirmed subject to such funds being applied to the purchase of the original Eagle rather than a substitute. CARRIED 600 NECKLACE PROJECT 601 Update on ie creative’s work to date (Barb) Barb advised that an injury sustained by one of the subcontractors had raised the possibility that the piece would not be ready for the targeted date of September 25, Canada Culture Days. Motion and seconded THAT the original date of 25 September 25 upheld. CARRIED 602 Unveiling Discussion for the unveiling included; 1. An agreed time of 4pm on the 25 September, Canada Culture Days 2. Barb would draft a press release which would need to be vetted by Shelley and Judy prior to Distribution to Council and (afterwards) the media 3. Agreed that a photo of the work in progress should be used to press purposes 4. Advertisements would be placed in both the MR Times and MR news. 5. The mayor would would be invited to officiate ACTION:Barb to draft the press release, source the images and arrange with The ACT’s marketing manager and Lindy to place an ad in local papers. 603 Necklace project signage Barb circulated examples of signage incorporating the Necklace project logo, but no decision was made as to the exact wording, size and material of the sign. ACTION: Barb to discuss with Mike Millward the Parks Superintendent the preferred placement and material of the signage. 700 MAPLE RIDGE MUSEUM – report on meeting between Barb, Lindy and Val Patenaude It was reported that Barb and Lindy had met with Val Patenaude to try to initiate better communication between the organization, as issues and activities of mutual concern had recently come to light. 701 Mosiac tiles installed in Downtown Maple Ridge Committee members shared information on a process though which the District’s Engineering department had requested that staff of the Maple Ridge Museum commission and install a public art project along 224th when other civic improvements were taking place. It was agreed that better internal communication was necessary to ensure that all implicated District departments were aware of the mandate of the Public Art Committee. It was agreed that, at a later date, the MRPAC should meet with Museum staff to ensure that their mutual collections/acquisitions policies were clear. 800 COMMITTEE TERMS AND APPOINTMENTS – 2010/2011 With the committee currently in place mandated to continue for another year, there was little further administration required other than to update the position of the position formerly held by Filio Kondylis to Barbara Duncan. 900 DATE OF NEXT MEETING The meeting was adjourned at 4:30pm the date of the next meet Wednesday October 13, at 3pm.
