PUBLIC ART STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
The Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Public Art Steering Committee, held in the
Coho Room, at Maple Ridge City Hall, 11995 Haney Place, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on
November 27, 2018 at 4:04 pm.

1. CALL TO ORDER
The Chair introduced Councillor Svendsen as the new Council liaison to the Committee.
2. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA

3. ADOPTION OF THE MINUTES

That the minutes of the Maple Ridge Public Art Steering Committee meeting dated
September 25, 2018 be adopted.

6. NEW AND UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Note: Item 6.1 was dealt with following Item 6.4
6.1. Creative City Summit 2018 – highlights and sharing of public art trends
The staff liaison provided a summary of the Creative City Summit held in Mississauga,
Ontario and shared images from the summit and the public art throughout the city. The staff
liaison spoke to the national and international trends in public art that were discussed at the
summit and the public art continuum of shifting from a collections based approach to
authenticity, experiences and vitality with values of placemaking and inclusion. The staff
liaison reviewed the changing definition, purpose, planning, governance, funding
mechanisms and policy practices in public art. There was discussion on the evolution of
public art in the local communities and internationally.
6.2. Artist in Residence Call – update on additional opportunity at Greg Moore Youth Centre
The staff liaison advised that the Youth Wellness Centre is moving out of the Greg Moore
Youth Centre thereby making available an office area and new opportunity. The staff liaison
outlined a one year term residency pilot program that creates a studio only residency within
the Greg Moore Youth Centre. A call will go out at the end of the year and a selection
committee will review the applications and bring recommendations to a future meeting in the
Spring.
6.3. Developer Public Art Guidelines and Polygon Project - update
The staff liaison provided a brief summary and reported on some clarifications added to the
guidelines.
The staff liaison advised that Phase 1 of the Polygon project has received final reading from
Council and it is anticipated that the public art and plaza project will complete near the end
of 2019. The selection panel will include Polygon staff, a community member, a Public Art
Steering Committee representative, representatives from the developer and a consultant to
organize the process.

That Wan Yi Lin be the representative for the Public Art Steering Committee on the selection
panel for the Polygon Development Project.

6.4. Culture Plan Implementation Schedule – update on draft status
The staff liaison provided an update on meetings with Patricia Huntsman, Kwantlen First
Nation and Katzie First Nation. It is anticipated that a draft that incorporates a higher level
framework will be circulated in December.

6.5. South Albion Community Center – selection process, theme, community engagement and
timeline
The staff liaison reported on funds available for the public art component of the South Albion
Community Centre and identified possible locations for public art including the concrete
retaining wall, lobby/corridor/gathering space in the community centre, the amphitheatre
and the riparian area with trail opportunities. There was discussion on opening the call to
enable artists to pick the location, providing a restrictions list, potential to include the artist
in residence, and further discussion will be needed as format/process may impact timeline.
Members will consider budget and the art call process at the next meeting.
6.6. Direction for future calls in 2019 and 2020 - timeline
The staff liaison will map out the approved projects and approximate timelines. There was
discussion on the 2020 Summer Games, the call process, a unifying symbol to identify
games locations and possible locations for a temporary public art experience. The staff
liaison will coordinate a presentation by City staff on the 2020 Summer Games at a future
meeting.
Way-Yi Lin shared thoughts on the 2018 street banners and there was discussion on future
banners including a line break to differentiate between the image and text.
6.7. 2019 Public Art Steering Committee Meeting Schedule – review and discussion
There was discussion on the meeting dates for 2019. The Public Art Steering Committee
meetings will move to generally align for the first Thursday of the appointed month with a
4:00 pm start time.

7. ROUNDTABLE
Barbara Duncan encouraged members to visit the current exhibition at the Maple Ridge ACT
Ensemble 2018 which is showing until December 20, 2018.
Leanne Koehn spoke to Earth Day banners and reminded members that the Christmas
Festival is a full day event ending with the Santa Claus parade.

Wan-Yi Lin spoke about her visit to the Polygon gallery and shared that she is travelling to
Taiwan to launch two projects.
Wayne Bissky invited members to a December gathering to celebrate the holiday season.
Yvonne Chui encouraged members to visit the Guo Pei: Couture Beyond exhibit and the Dana
Claxton exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
