That the Agenda for April 4, 2012 be adopted with the following amendment; • Item 7.3.2 will be deferred to the May meeting. CARRIED R12-011 Minutes of March 7, 2012 Meeting Motion was moved and seconded ) That the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of March 7, 2012 be adopted as circulated. CARRIED Please note that Councillor Ashlie joined the meeting at 7:12 p.m. 4. Delegations & Presentations -Nil 4.1 Salvation Army, The Caring Place -Darrell Pilgrim, Executive Director Darrell Pilgrim, Director for the Salvation Army, The Caring Place gave a presentation on the services that are provided by The Caring Place along with homelessness statistics within our community. Mr. Pilgrim reviewed Sonia's Cradle (children and youth programs) with the Committee and noted that; o 70 at risk kids and teens were sent to summer camp for one week o Family transitional house o 120 students receive back to school supplies o Provide food and toys for over 50 families o Every day 100 bag lunches for elementary students Darrell Pilgrim advised that there will be a fundraising event called "The Amazing Race" on Saturday, June 9, 2012 where teams of four can participate for a cost of $150. Mr. Pilgrim noted that this event will take place in Memorial Peace Park. Please note that Darrell Pilgrim left the meeting at 8:02 p.m. 5. Roundtable Treena Innes -reported on Jessie Miller who is a social media guru and is going into elementary and high schools to discuss how vulnerable kids are within social media sites. S/Sgt. Andrew Martin -reported that Alanna Dunlop was successful in getting a $2000 grant for a program to support youth at risk through nutrition and positive activities .. New Business 6.1 Discussion regarding questions for upcoming presentation from the gaming representative. Sue Wheeler advised that a representative from the BC Lottery Corporation will be invited to attend a future meeting and requested that the Committee come up with a list of questions to be answered. Shawn Matthewson reviewed the staff report "Community Strategies: The Social Impacts of Gambling and Gaming Centres" with the Committee. Shawn Matthewson reviewed the plans for the casino with the Committee. The Committee discussed what potential questions could and/or should be asked of the gaming representative: • Limitations or cut offs to bank machines, locations of bank machines -are there any restrictions that can be put in place. • What are the prevention strategies that can be put in place? • Are there any grants for preventative strategies? • How do we prevent an increase in crimes related to the new facility? • Examples of signage to educate those around the dangers of gaming addiction. Unfinished Business 7.1 BC Poverty Reduction Plan Shawn Matthewson reviewed the staff report titled "Poverty Reduction Plan for BC" with the Committee. The Committee discussed the challenges and negative impacts on our community as a result of not having a BC Poverty Reduction Plan. The Committee also discussed ideas on how this can be addressed with an effective impact. Sue Wheeler advised the Committee that the Community Network is working to address poverty at the local level. ACTION ITEM: To be added to a future agenda for further discussion. 7.2 Review of Previous UBCM Resolution on Poverty and Income Assistance -deferred 7.3 Seniors Network Issue Updates 7.3.1 Progress on Dental Day Councillor Masse provided an update on the potential of a dental day for seniors that require dental work but are not able to pay for this service. 7.3.2 Results of Landlord Training Workshop -deferred Social Planning Advisory Committee Regular Minutes Page 3 of 4 Social Planning Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Minutes April 4, 2012 8. Committee Reports 8.1 Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Katzie Community Network Updates -deferred 8.2 2011 Spirit of Community Awards -update Treena Innes reviewed the recipients of the 2011 Spirit of Community Awards; • The News -over 25 employees • Russell Mechanical Services -under 25 employees • Leanne Koehn -Recycling -Individual • Bruce Hobbs -Alouette Valley Association R12-012 Motion was moved and seconded That a recommendation be forwarded to Council that the above mentioned community members are awarded the 2011 Spirit of Community Awards. 8.3 Port Haney Neighbourhood Change Initiative Update -deferred 9.
