R12-014 That the Agenda for May 2, 2012 be adopted with the following amendment; • Item 7.3.2 will be deferred to the June meeting. Minutes of April 4, 2012 Meeting Motion was moved and seconded That the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of April 4, 2012 be adopted as circulated. CARRIED CARRIED 4. Delegations & Presentations -Nil 4.1 A Day in the Life of Poverty -Roberta O'Brien, ECO (Early Childhood Development) Coordinator Please note that Sarah Nelson joined the meeting at 7:18 p.m. Roberta O'Brien, ECD (Early Childhood Development) Coordinator reviewed the Poverty 2011 Local , Provincial, National and International Perspectives report produced by Ridge Meadows Early Childhood Development Committee and provided examples to illustrate poverty of income, resources and time. Please note that Alanna Robson joined the meeting at 7:25 p.m. Ms. O'Brien reviewed the "Parent Barriers Survey" and the "A Day in the Life of Poverty -Beyond Squeezed " forum poster that will take place on June 9, 2012 at Maple Ridge Baptist Church between 9:30 -3:00 p.m. Ms. O'Brien noted that there is no cost associated with this forum and encouraged members to register for this event. Candace Gordon reported that a group has met with the goal of determining what food security programs are currently available within School District 42. A survey will be distributed to all schools to provide an inventory of what is currently available in all schools. Please note that Roberta O'Brien left the meeting at 8:07 p.m. 5. Roundtable Sue Wheeler -reported that the Alouette Heights, the Supportive Housing Apartment complex is expected to open for tenants by July. She also noted that the Ministerial Association has been working with Alouette Home Start Society to gather donations to build Tenant Starter Kits. These kits will be given to every new resident so that they have everything they need to start their new homes. AHSS is looking for donations to complete the kits. Social Planning Advisory Committee Regular Minutes Page 2 of 4 ) Social Planning Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Minutes May 2, 2012 Ms. Wheeler also reported that she made a presentation to Pitt Meadows Council , at their request, to provide them with information on how the Social Planning Advisory Committee operates and the current work plan and direction. 5.1 Recognition of Citizen of the Year -Candace Gordon Shawn Matthewson, Councillor Ashlie and Kathy Marshall congratulated Candace Gordon on receiving the "Citizen of the Year" award. Candace Gordon thanked the Committee for their letter of support. Please note that Item 6.3 was dealt with prior to Item 6.2 5.2 The Cost of Poverty-A review of the following reports was given: 5.2.1 Canadian Centre for Policy Alternative (CCPA): The Cost of Poverty 5.2.2 5.2.3 Shawn Matthewson reviewed the Summary of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternative (CCPA): The Cost of Poverty with the Committee. Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) 15X15: A Comprehensive Policy Framework for Early Human Capital Investment Shawn Matthewson advised that the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) 15X15: A Comprehensive Policy is about reducing the percentage of vulnerable children entering Kindergarten in BC to 15% by 2015 and noted that Dr. Paul Kershaw, one of the authors of the report, will be the key note speaker at the Poverty Forum on June 9. A New Deal for Fam ilies Shawn Matthewson reviewed HELP BC's New Deal for families that looks at three cornerstone investments in families with young children. The three policy changes center on benefits for new mothers and fathers, child care at $10 per day and flex time for parents. HELP BC research shows that making these investments in young children will pay off in the long run. Please note that Item 6.3 was dealt with after Item 6.1 and before Item 6.2 5.3 Healthy Communities Update Sue Wheeler provided a review and update on the partnership initiative with Fraser Health; the Healthy Communities Initiative, and showed the two Healthy Communities videos that were recently presented at the Healthy Communities Forum; one for Maple Ridge and one for Pitt Meadows. 6. Unfinished Business 6.1 Update on the presentation from the Community Gaming Centre Representative Social Planning Advisory Committee Regular Minutes Page 3 of 4 Social Planning Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Minutes May 2, 2012 Councillor Ashlie reported that she has had a couple of discussions with Chuck Keeling from the Real Canadian Casino Corporation who has advised that their Corporation would like to work with the Committee on how best to apply any monies that are available on a yearly basis back to this community. Councillor Ashlie also reviewed how the gaming money would be able to be used for future community projects. 7. Committee Reports 7.1 Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Katzie Community Network Update Candace Gordon provided an update on the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Katzie Community Network noting that yesterday there was a meeting to develop an Action Plan regarding the implementation of the strategic plan and noted that once completed this will be shared with the Committee. Ms. Gordon noted that three emerging planning tables (youth, healthy living, arts and culture community planning) were established at this meeting. 7.2 2011 Spirit of Community Awards -update Shawn Matthewson provided an update on the 2011 Spirit of Community Awards noting that once a date has been confirmed for the presentation to Council, the committee will be informed. 7.3 Port Haney Neighbourhood Change Initiative Update Sue Wheeler provided an update on the Port Haney Neighbourhood Change Initiative noting that this past weekend the group had their annual clean up in their neighborhood. Ms. Wheeler noted that one of the things the group is hoping to achieve is a new neighbourhood park. 8.
