Adoption of the Agenda R11-022 It was moved and seconded Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Municipal Advisory Committee on Accessibility Issues Page 1 of5 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues October 20, 2011 3. R11-023 That the Agenda dated October 21, 2011 be adopted with the following amendments: • Defer Item 5.2 to the November meeting • Add Item 5.9 Membership Terms CARRIED Minutes of the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Regular Meeting It was moved and seconded That the Minutes of the September 15, 2011 Regular Meeting be adopted. CARRIED Please note that Item 4.1 was dealt with after Item 5.1 and prior to Item 5.2 4. Delegations and Presentations -Nil R11-024 4.1 Tactile Surfaces -Engineering Department Michael Eng, Traffic and Engineer Technologist reviewed the two tactile surface products made by Armatile and ADA with the Committee. The Committee reviewed the history, costs, color differences, dome differences, benefits and cons of both products. It was moved and seconded That the Armatile tactile surface product be the material used for any tactile surfacing in Maple Ridge. CARRIED 5. Unfinished & New Business Please note that Item 5.1 was dealt with after Item 3 and before Item 4.1 5.1 2012 -2016 Business Plan -review and adoption The Committee reviewed the draft 2012-2016 Business Plan and noted they would like to see an ongoing relationship with LAST added to the "Ongoing Deliverables". It was also noted that under "Found Milestones" Spinal Cord Injury Fitness should be added after "SciFit". The Committee agreed that "Explore and support opportunities to include the universa' built environment" should replace "Revisit the Mandate and look for opportunities to include built environment" under the Workplan Highlights -2012 Deliverables section. Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Page 2 of 5 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues October 20, 2011 Please note that Michael Eng, Traffic & Engineering Technologist joined the meeting at 5:33 p.m. R11-024 It was moved and seconded 11-025 J That the amended 2012 -2016 Business Plan be approved and forwarded to Council for adoption. CARRIED Please note that Item 4.1 was dealt with after Item 5.1 and before Item 5.2 Please note that Michael Eng left the meeting at 6:18 p.m. 5.2 Accessibility and Utility Poles -recommendation for consideration -deferred to November 5.3 Washroom at Transit Stops Councillor Hogarth reviewed the background information on the petition to have washrooms at transit stops and noted that he believes that there is some validity to the request. The Committee discussed the request. It was moved and seconded That the on line petition for universal washrooms on major transit hubs be supported and that a recommendation be forwarded to Council to support the idea of washrooms at major transit stops and further that Translink review and implement SmartCard technology to reduce barriers for functionality and accessibility. CARRIED Opposed: Joylene MacBurnie 5.4 Street lights at 122nd and Harris Road 5.5 Joylene MacBurnie advised the Committee that the street lights located at 122nd and Harris Road are not coming on at night. ACTION ITEM: Ramp at Kanaka Lodge Councillor Bell will review this item with his Engineering Department and report back to the Committee. Julie Lewis advised the Committee that clients are having issues with the ramp at Kanaka Lodge as it is very steep, has no railings and there is a step at the end of the ramp. Ms. Lew is noted that the owner has been approached over the years but is at a loss for a solution to the issue. Ms. Lewis also noted that senior's are being isolated at Kanaka Lodge. Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility issues Page 3 of5 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues October 20, 2011 R11-026 R11-027 It was moved and seconded That a recommendation be forwarded to Council advised them that it has been brought to the Committee's attention that there might be an issue with a ramp with wheelchair access at Kanaka Lodge that poses a hazardous situation and that the municipality take a look at it. CARRIED 5.6 Intersection of Laity Road and Lougheed Hwy John Kanjer advised that the island located at Laity and Lougheed is too steep and a person in wheelchair cannot make it up on to the island. Councillor Hogarth provided an example of a great solution to this problem. Councillor Hogarth also noted that the island located at Laity and Lougheed is under the Ministry of Transportation however the location at 228th is under our jurisdiction. ACTION ITEM: Staff will forward this on to the Engineering Department for further review. 5. 7 Maple Ridge Bowling Alley -ramp accessibility Petra Frederick reviewed the request from the School District regarding the Maple Ridge Bowling Alley and the fact that there is no inside ramp to access the bowling lanes. It was moved and seconded That a recommendation be forwarded to Council making them aware of this situation and asking them to send a letter (on behalf of the Committee) recommending that a ramp be installed at the bowling alley and letting them know that the committee will support and assist the process and installation of a ramp. And that it be noted that businesses that improve their accessibility can be recognized for their public awareness and support of our programs. CARRIED 5.8 Cam Neely Arena -accessibility seating area Petra Frederick reviewed the request from a Special Education Assistant who attended a graduation ceremony at the Cam Neely Arena and noted that if you're a person using a wheelchair there is no access afterhours to the arena as the elevator is only accessible during the time when the restaurant is open. ACTION ITEM: That this item remain on the next agenda for further review. 5.9 Committee Membership Review Petra Frederick reviewed the process for those community at large members whose terms expire on December 31, 2011 and noted that those members who are interested in being reappointed are to send an email the Committee Clerk prior to November 1st to let us know what your intentions are. Roundtable Gillian Small noted that the Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living (RMACL) is looking for feedback from the community and asked those who are interested to take a survey and return it to the office. Teresa Daniels noted that she has started a power wheelchair soccer team at Haney Elementary School on Wednesday's at 8:00 p.m . and all ages starting at 8 years old are welcome to participate. Manfred Wuensche noted that it is Community Living Month and next Friday, October 28th there will be a BBQ lunch that will be open to anyone between 11:30 -2:00 p.m. in front of The Act. 8.
