on Accessibility Issues, held in the Fraser Room at the Maple Ridge Public Library, 224 70 Dewdney

That the Minutes of the October 20, 2011 Regular Meeting be adopted.

Please note that Item 5.1 was dealt with after Item 3 and before Item 4.1
5.1 Accessibility and Utility Poles -recommendation for consideration -deferred to
November
John Ricketts provided an update on the BC Hydro Utility Poles and requested that a
recommendation be sent to Council to send a letter to BC Hydro recommending that when
they are installing hydro poles that some consideration be given to those with accessibility
issue.
Councillor Bell requested that before this recommendation is sent forward that an
invitation be sent to the BC Hydro rep for our area.
It was moved and seconded
That a request be sent to both Mayor(s) recommending that a letter be sent on behalf of
MACAI to invite representatives from BC Hydro, Telus and BC Transmission to attend a
future meeting to discuss the placement of utility poles.
And that a sub-committee consisting of Teresa Daniels and Gillian Small be formed to
create video evidence of how the current placement of utility poles affect those with
accessibility issues.

5.2 Cam Neely Arena -accessibility seating area
Petra Frederick provided an update on the accessibility issue at the Cam Neely Arena and
noted that she visited this site and took pictures. Ms. Frederick noted that there is one
section where it is accessible with a small safety bumper; however access is only available
when the restaurant is open.

ACTION ITEM: That staff request an Inspection Officer to visit this site to ensure
that code is being met and an update provided back to the
Committee.
5.3 Rick Hansen -Selection of Relay Individuals
Petra Frederick advised the Committee that the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion foundation
is in the process of retracing their steps through Canada as a celebration of Rick
Hansen's original Wheels in Motion Tour. Ms. Frederick noted that on May 16th there will
be an evening ceremony in Memorial Peace Park and on May 17th there will be a
lunchtime stop in Pitt Meadows City Hall.
Petra Frederick noted that the Committee is looking for nominations for torch barriers and
medal holders.
ACTION ITEM: Staff to email distribute the promotional material for the Rick Hansen
Relay Individuals nomination process to the Committee.

That a sub-committee consisting of Gillian Small, Greg Turnbull, Teresa Daniels is formed
to work with staff to review and decide on the three nominees for the Rick Hansen Relay
Individuals.

5.4 Snow Angels
Petra Frederick reviewed the Snow Angels program (neighbors helping neighbors) with the
Committee and noted that the community representative that ran the program last year is
no longer able to do so. Ms. Frederick advised the Committee that they are currently
looking for someone to distribute the information and receive nominations and participate
in picking the award recipient.
Joylene MacBurnie volunteered to help with this program. Gillian Small noted that she
would like to take the information back to the Ridge Meadows Association for Community
Living to work with support staff on this project.
Please note that Councillor Bell and Shelley Jorde left the meeting at 6:30 p.m.

7. Roundtable
Councillor Hogarth and Councillor Bell thanked Greg Turnbull for his dedication and
commitment for the past 6 years and presented him with the Maple Ridge book.
Greg Turnbull reviewed the "Apple's AssistiveTouch Helps the Disabled Use a Smartphone"
information with the Committee.

Manfred Wuensche noted that the Community Living celebration had a great turn out.
John Kanjer noted that Councillor Hogarth has made great contributions to the Committee
and he would like to see as many members on this Committee voting for him on Saturday,
November 19th_
Joylene MacBurnie noted that the lights at 122nd and Harris Road are now working.
Councillor Hogarth reported on how the Disability Games are no longer going to be hosting
events.
Petra Frederick advised that the Disability Games Society has disbanded at this time as they
no longer have the manpower or buy in to move forward; however with the hope that the
society will be re instated in the future.
