Adoption of the Agenda Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Municipal Advisory Committee on Accessibility issues Page 1 of 4 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues March 15, 2012 R12-011 3. R12-012 It was moved and seconded That the Agenda dated March 15, 2012 be adopted with the following amendments: • Remove Item 4.2 Accessible Pedestrian Activated Cross Walk CARRIED Minutes of the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Regular Meeting It was moved and seconded That the Minutes of the February 16, 2012 Regular Meeting be adopted. CARRIED 4. Delegations and Presentations 4.1 Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Sandra Baker, Registered Audiologist and Hearing Instrument Practitioner gave a presentation on the services that the Western Institute for the Dead and Hard of Hearing offer to those with hearing impairments and reviewed the statistics of hearing impairments with the Committee. Unfinished & New Business R12-007 R12-013 Amendment 5.1 Downtown Accessible Parking Petra Frederick provided an update on the Downtown Accessible Parking and advised that after a discussion with the Engineering Department it has been determined that they are not going to be working on a parking study. It was moved and seconded That a recommendation be forwarded to Council that the amount of accessible stalls not be reduced until staff have had the opportunity to complete their parking study for the downtown core. It was moved and seconded Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Page2 of4 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues March 15, 2012 That the resolution be amended to change the following text "their" to "a" and include the text "including the specifications of applications of accessible spots". CARRIED MOTION AS AMENDED CARRIED 5.2 Annual Accessibility Awards Petra Frederick provided an update on the Annual Accessibility Awards and distributed the nomination form to the committee members. Ms. Frederick advised that she will tentatively book the awards for Monday, June 3rd. It was recommended on the nomination form that the words "by eliminating architectural barriers that impede participation" be added after "environment". 6. Committee Reports 6.1 Curb Cuts & Bus Stop Pads Petra Frederick advised that the 2011-2012 Curb Cuts and Bus Stop Pads spreadsheet has been included in the agenda package and encouraged the sub- committee to communicate with each other on the status of these items along with a top ten list for 2012. 6.2 Annual Accessibility Awards Petra Frederick advised that the planning for the Annual Accessibility Awards is under way. 6.3 Displays & Presentations Petra Frederick advised that the Committee should be planning their presentation to Council. The committee agreed to make a presentation at a May Council meeting. The Committee discussed having an information table at the Home Show. Councillor Hogarth noted that the nomination form should be available for the Home Show. 6.4 Rick Hansen Planning Committee Update Petra Frederick provided an update on the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Celebration that will take place over two days in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and noted that the planning is going well. Ms. Frederick advised that there will be opportunities for information on the committee to be on display at both events. The Committee discussed creating a banner for the Committee. ACTION ITEM: Staff to work with Kevin Priebe, the communications department along with the Strategic Economic Initiatives on ideas for a committee banner. Roundtable Petra Frederick confirmed that there are approximately 40 Universal Design Guidelines books left and noted that there have not been any updates made to the book as two grant applications have been denied. Councillor Hogarth reported on the changes that have been made in the parking lot located behind the Haney Place Mall on Selkirk Road in particular the sidewalk that has been established. Councillor Hogarth noted that a planter box has been placed at the end of the sidewalk and there are no drop curbs. The Curb Cuts and Bus Stop Pads sub-committee agreed to make this a priority at their next meeting. Patricia Palomino reported on the limited access to bus stops located on Dewdney Trunk Road and Laity Street from 212th Street as there are no lanes or cuts in between the houses. Kevin Priebe requested that members send some words and pictures reflecting accessibility within both communities to be added to the Accessibility Awards nomination form. Julie Lewis reported on the lack of traffic calming on 224th Street. Councillor Hogarth provided an update on some of the changes that are expected to take place in the downtown co re with regards to traffic calming on 224th Street. 8.
