R12-017 There being a quorum present, the Chair called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m. Adoption of the Agenda It was moved and seconded That the Agenda dated June 21, 2012 be adopted with the following amendments: • Add Item 4.2 Eric Langton Playground Request • Please note that Item 4.2 was dealt with prior to Item 4.1 • Add Item 5.4 Pitt Meadows Pedestrian Task Force CARRIED Minutes of the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Regular Meeting It was moved and seconded That the Minutes of the April 19, 2012 Regular Meeting be adopted. Please note that Brenda Brown joined the meeting at 5:25 p.m. Please note that Councillor Bell joined the meeting at 5:32 p.m. CARRIED 4. Delegations and Presentations Please note that Item 4.2 was dealt with prior to Item 4.1 4.1 United Way 's 2011 Seniors Forum -Aging with Dignity -Making it Happen for Everyone Bob Foster, Chair, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Katzie Seniors Network, provided an update on the network. Heather Treleaven, Coordinator, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Katzie Seniors Network gave a presentation that provided an update on the United Way's 2011 Seniors Forum on the Seniors Vulnerability Report. Ms. Treleaven provided statistics on those that are considered vulnerable within the seniors' community, differences across the communities, along with ways to improve our community for vulnerable seniors. Ms. Treleaven reviewed the Seniors Network Initiatives with the Committee which included; Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Page 2 of5 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility issues June 21, 2012 R12-018 • Seniors Resource Guide, • Seniors focused food drive in June, • Support and training initiative for building managers at low income, seniors housing rental complexes, • Education seminars for older adults and their families on elder abuse, and financial literacy. Please note that Bob Foster and Heather Treleaven left the meeting at 5:53 p.m. Please note that Item 4.2 was dealt with prior to Item 4.1 4.2 Eric Langton Playground Request Lizette Peckham advised the Committee that their playground has been vandalized to the point of not being usable and reviewed the proposal for accessible play equipment for Eric Langton Elementary School. David Warner, Habitat Services reviewed the proposed accessible equipment that could be used for the new play structure. Lizette Peckham reviewed the cost of the proposed equipment along with the funds that have currently been obtained. Heather Treleaven advised the Committee that the school PAC has raised $30,000 and the Meadow Ridge Rotary will contribute $35,000 if there are matching funds from another source. The total cost of the proposed play structure is $100,000 Ms. Peckham advised that once the equipment is available that a "Community Build" would take place where the community would get together to install the equipment. It was moved and seconded That a letter of support be sent forwarded to Maple Ridge Council endorsing the accessible playground equipment at Eric Langton Elementary School. And that the curb surrounding the play structure be fully accessible with no barriers (IE: no lip). CARRIED Please note that Shelley Jorde, Lizette Peckham and David Warner left the meeting at 5:41 p.m. Petra Frederick thanked Manfred Wuensche for his service and dedication to MACAI and advised the Committee that he will be retiring on June 29, 2012. Councillor Bell thanked Manfred for his work on the committee and in the community and wished him all the best in his retirement. 5. Unfinished & New Business Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility issues Page 3 of5 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues June 21, 2012 5.1 Downtown Accessible Parking Petra Frederick provided an update on the Downtown Accessible Parking and advised that she will send out a reminder email to the Committee to send her their recommendations on this item. Ms. Frederick advised the Committee that the 15 minute parking spots (there are two) by the Bank of Montreal on the East side of 224th will be removed however the accessible spots in front of the Fuller Watson on Lougheed Highway will remain. 5.2 Rick Hansen Celebration Petra Frederick reviewed the Rick Hansen Celebration events that took place in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on May 16th and 17th. 5.3 Enabling Accessibility Grant Petra Frederick provided updates on the "Enabling Accessibility Funding" grants that were available for the City of Pitt Meadows and the District of Maple Ridge. Ms. Frederick noted that for the City of Pitt Meadows a six month extension has been granted and requested that Committee members email her their recommendations for projects that would improve the accessibility of the Pitt Meadows family recreation centre as there is $17,000 left over from the grant. Ms. Frederick provided an update on the work that has been done in Maple Ridge and once again requested Committee members to email her their recommendations for projects that would improve accessibility at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre. Staff requested that suggestions be sent back via email by the end of the week. 5.4 City of Pitt Meadows Pedestrian and Cycling Task Force Petra Frederick advised that the City of Pitt Meadows is looking for a member of MACAI to sit on their Pedestrian and Cycling Task Force and noted they had their first information session was held on June 20th. Ms. Frederick advised that they are looking for input from this committee as to accessibility on the dykes and within their pedestrian plan. Kevin Priebe volunteered to be the representative on the City of Pitt Meadows Pedestrian and Cycling Task Force 6. Committee Reports 6.1 Curb Cuts & Bus Stop Pads Teresa Whyte reviewed the 2011-2012 Curb Cut and Sidewalk Requests. Staff will send the full list to the Maple Ridge Engineering Department. 6.1.1 Top Ten List Required Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Page 4 of5 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues June 21, 2012 The sub-committee will provide the Committee with their recommendations at the September meeting. 6.2 Annual Accessibility Awards Councillor Bell provided a review of the Annual Accessibility Awards that took place in Maple Ridge in Council Chambers. Councillor Bell met with the Chamber of Commerce Uoint Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge) and they want to get involved in events in the community and they might want to participate in the next accessibility event with regards to promoting it. The Committee discussed ideas for the 10th Annual Accessibility Awards (held in 2013). 6.3 Displays & Presentations Petra Frederick advised that two presentations were made (one to Pitt Meadows Council and one to Maple Ridge Council).
