R13-011 3. 0 R13-012 Adoption of the Agenda It was moved and seconded That the Agenda dated March 21, 2013 be adopted CARRIED Minutes of the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Regular Meeting It was moved and seconded Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Municipal Advisory Committee on Accessibility Issues Page 1 of4 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Thursday, March 21, 2013 That the Minutes of the February 21, 2013 Regular Meeting be amended to insert details and that the minutes as amended be adopted. • Item 5.1 Rename the title: Amending the MACAI Bylaw • Item 5.3 -Add: Any changes to awards will have to be submitted to Council for approval CARRIED 4. Delegations and Presentations 4.1 Health and Wellness Christa Balatti and Jeff Lemire Jeff Lemire, Recreation Programmer for Health and Wellness from the District of Maple Ridge, gave an overview of the upcoming renovation for the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre weight room and asked the Committee to bring forth any suggestions for the project with regards to accessibility. The Committee commented on lighting for alarms, a frequency system for hearing aids, placement of speakers for fitness classes and consulting the MACAI handbook and the CNIB Website for accessibility building modifications. Mr. Lemire will review the architect plans with the Committee once they are complete at a future meeting. ) Note: Bruce Bell entered the meeting at 5:17pm. 5. Unfinished & New Business 5.1 Amending the Bylaw Update Petra Fredrick, Recreation Coordinator for the District of Maple Ridge led discussion on whether the Committee should proceed with a report to Council to amend the MACAI Bylaw to include a youth member. Action Item: Ms. Fredrick will research other Council Committee initiatives to have a youth representative and discuss this with staff for the next meeting. 5.2 10th Annual Accessibility Awards (event discussions) Petra Frederick confirmed the date and venue of the 10th Annual Accessibility Awards for Thursday June 6th 2013 6:30 pm to 7:30pm in the Council Chambers. The Committee discussed strategies to promote the event including: inviting the press, creating posters and Social Media. Gillian Small explained the featured Artwork on the Flyer was made by people with developmental disabilities and the art will be displayed on the web. Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Page2 of4 \ j Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Thursday, March 21, 2013 The Committee agreed that Al Hogarth and Bruce Bell will MC the event and the event will have refreshments, fruits, vegetables and cake. Various local sports groups will be invited to display information about their organization on the night of the event. 5.3 Staff update Pitt Meadows Engineering Department Petra Fredrick updated the Committee on various Pitt Meadows engineering projects underway. Ms. Fredrick explained that Pitt Meadows invited the Committee to comment on the bulb out curb extension side walk design on major roads. The Committee agreed this bulb out design increases pedestrian safety by increasing pedestrian visibility to traffic, traffic visibility to the pedestrian, and shortening the distance to the other side of the street (helping slower pedestrians). 5.4 CNIB Event (member participation request) (March 23rd @ RMSS) Petra Fredrick described and invited the Committee to attend the Canadian National Institute for the Blind event at the Ridge Meadows Senior Secondary School on March 23, 2013. 6. Committee Reports 6.1 Confirm Sub Committee Appointments -deferred 6.2 Curb Cuts & Bus Stop Pads Petra Fredrick advised the Committee that the curb cuts and bus stop pads Sub- Committee should meet soon to compile a 2014 list of recommended locations for September 2013. Ms. Fredrick also updated the Committee on various Maple Ridge Engineering projects underway including: • The multi use lane construction on Lougheed Highway between 216th Avenue and Laity Street • The sidewalk construction along the block of Lougheed Highway and 227th The Committee discussed need for renovating the Laity Street and Lougheed Highway intersection which is not part of the Multi use lane construction project currently. Action Item: Petra Fredrick will follow up with Engineering Staff about the Laity Street and Lougheed Highway intersection and ask about an updated list of curb cuts and bus stop pads projects. 6.3 Annual Accessibility Awards -Dealt with under Unfinished/New business Item 5.2 6.4 Displays & Presentations Petra Fredrick advised the Committee that currently the MACAI Committee only has one roll up poster. The Committee discussed creating a poster and rack cards for the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Page 3 of4 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Committee on Accessibility Issues Thursday, March 21, 2013 Committee to be displayed at the Home show, MACAI awards event and in Municipal Hall and possibly including this in the MACAI budget. The Committee discussed creating one pamphlet to highlight all the Council Committees and Commissions or having separate pamphlets for each and also business cards. Note: It was the consensus of the Committee to change from the item topic Action Item: Petra Fredrick will do a mock up of possible MACAI Committee business cards and bring them to the next meeting for review. The Committee discussed composing a letter or encouraging Mayor and Council to compose one to the Revs Maple Ridge Bowling Alley to consider installing a ramp and modifying their establishment to increase accessibility. 7. Roundtable Kevin Priebe -reported he contacted Accessible Housing BC and found a lot of accessible housing units are not occupied by people who have disabilities. He explained that there appears to be ittle coordination between organizations in order to maximize needs with placement. The Committee discussed the need to shift to Universal Housing standards in order to not segregate people with disabilities to certain places. Joylene MacBurnie -enquired about the municipal process of getting a 'Slow Down Child with Hearing Impairment at Play' sign made and posted in her neighborhood. Al Hogarth-reported on the municipalities work to create a regional action plan highlighting creation and management of affordable housing. He would like to see the plan amended to include universal housing standards within all housing types and not just multifamily units. 8. Correspondence-Nil 9.
