The Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Municipal Advisory
Committee on Accessibility Issues, held in the Blaney Room at the Maple Ridge Municipal Hall,
11995 Haney Place, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 5:00 pm.

There being a quorum present, Kevin Priebe, Chair called the meeting to order at 5:03
pm and introductions were made.

That the Minutes of the April 17, 2014 Regular Meeting be adopted with the following
amendment;
• Gillian Small was absent for the meeting.

5. Unfinished & New Business
5.1 MACAI Award Review of Event
Petra Frederick reviewed the MACAI awards event and photos. A comment
suggested for the next awards event held in Maple Ridge, would be to use a
more public venue.
Committee members felt it was a successful and well-attended event and
offered suggestions for next year's event.
Please note: Bernice entered the meeting at 5:10 pm
5.2 Adult Services for Persons with Disabilities (Brainstorm) -Community Request
Petra Frederick reviewed a suggestion from concerned citizens regarding
individuals looking for services for adults with varying abilities and financial
restraints. These individuals also face the challenge of needing support workers
to participate in activities.
Councillor Al Hogarth suggested the Disability White Paper, which discusses this
topic be included in the next agenda for discussion on this topic.
Gillian Small suggested getting these adults in contact with Ridge Meadows
Association for Community Living to explore resources available there.
5.3 Signage (Discussion) -Municipal Request

Petra Frederick reviewed signage forwarded from the Operations centre
requesting recommendations on signage to be installed at the Operations for
individuals who may require assistance.
Committee members found the sign to be very appropriate, but reminded that
the button should be low enough for individuals in wheelchairs to reach (42")
and that brail should be included on the signage.
Asset Mapping Project Discussion
Kevin Priebe reviewed a handout he composed which includes the variables the
committee's asset mapping project would include. Mr. Priebe recommended to
being with the bus stops, followed by crossings, curb cuts, tactile surfaces,
lighting, audible signals and then washroom.
Bernice Rolls recommended a quick training session on what committee
members will be looking for.

Councillor Al Hogarth volunteered to work with Maple Ridge Engineering to
produce a map of bus stops in Maple Ridge.
Committee members discussed focusing on bus stops in the downtown core
area and school zones.

6.1 Curb Cuts & Bus Stop Pads -Nil

6.3 Displays & Presentations -Nil
7. Roundtable
Thelma Boudreau reported a successful starberry tea held at the Pitt Meadows Seniors
Centre recently with 116 participants.
Councillor Bruce Bell reported on a very successful Pitt Meadows Day held on June 7.
Gillian Small reported that last month Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living
had their first Run-Walk-Roll event in the South Bonson area with over 100 participants.
Ms. Small suggested a future agenda item to be addressing the labeling of people with
disabilities.
Maria Kovacs reported she recently attended the volunteer appreciation dinner.
Connel le Styles commented on her anticipation of the White Paper results.
Kev in Priebe reported that Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club recently held an open house at
Whonnock Lake and they are working on a grant to facilitate an increase to the dock at
Whonnock Lake and a new water course for time trials.
