This group is one of a number of community Senior’s Planning Tables funded by the United Way. These groups are run by seniors for seniors. Ms. Treleaven explained that the Seniors Network is working to prepare for an aging population and to improve accessibility for all. The network supports age friendly policies that allow people to remain active and age in place. The intergenerational garden in Maple Ridge is one of the projects the Seniors Network has successfully completed in the past. Priorities for seniors in the community were identified in 2009. Maple Ridge Council passed a resolution in October 2014 to proceed with the grant application to the Union of BC Municipalities to become an Age Friendly Community. A $20,000 planning grant was received for the creation of an “engaged, energized and collaborative age-friendly action plan”. Ms. Treleaven requested that MACAI endorse the creation of the action plan and consider becoming involved in the process. The Seniors Network meets on the last Thursday of every second month in the Hilton Haider Room at the Randy Herman Building. The next meeting will be on March 26, 2015. Having one or two MACAI members sit on the Age Friendly Advisory Committee will allow information from that group to be brought back to MACAI for feedback and communication to Council. An action plan needs to be created and submitted to UBCM to gain the Age Friendly designation. Councillor Speirs entered the meeting at 5:09 pm. Monthly deductions are being replaced by annual limits. These changes could result in negative impacts for recipients, especially for those who struggle with long term planning. Different approaches to responding to these changes were discussed. It was felt that Maple Ridge may be impacted more than other communities due to the local employment opportunities for those with developmental disabilities. The Staff Liaison will investigate inviting a representative from the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation to explain the changes and answer questions.
