Heather Treleaven made a presentation on the Maple Ridge / Pitt Meadows /
Katzie Seniors Network. This group is one of a number of community Senior’s
Planning Tables funded by the United Way. These groups are run by seniors for
seniors.
Ms. Treleaven explained that the Seniors Network is working to prepare for an
aging population and to improve accessibility for all. The network supports age
friendly policies that allow people to remain active and age in place. The
intergenerational garden in Maple Ridge is one of the projects the Seniors
Network has successfully completed in the past.
Priorities for seniors in the community were identified in 2009. Maple Ridge
Council passed a resolution in October 2014 to proceed with the grant
application to the Union of BC Municipalities to become an Age Friendly
Community. A $20,000 planning grant was received for the creation of an
“engaged, energized and collaborative age-friendly action plan”. Ms. Treleaven
requested that MACAI endorse the creation of the action plan and consider
becoming involved in the process.
The Seniors Network meets on the last Thursday of every second month in the
Hilton Haider Room at the Randy Herman Building. The next meeting will be on
March 26, 2015.
Having one or two MACAI members sit on the Age Friendly Advisory Committee
will allow information from that group to be brought back to MACAI for feedback
and communication to Council. An action plan needs to be created and
submitted to UBCM to gain the Age Friendly designation.
Councillor Speirs entered the meeting at 5:09 pm.

Mr. Priebe began chairing the meeting. He reported on the work done by the
Terms of Reference sub committee. The Sub Committee recommends better
defining accessibility and adding a vision to the committee mandate. The
committee discussed possible changes to the mandate.
The committee came to a consensus regarding the purpose of the committee
and based on this a new mandate and a definition of accessibility were drafted.
These changes will go back to Council for debate.
The Committee discussed whether changes should be made to the membership
specified by the bylaw. It was decided that the membership should remain
unchanged however efforts should be made to better engage agencies and
other levels of government who provide accessibility services. The committee
plans to invite speakers to make presentations and refer specific issues to
agencies for review.

Gillian Small explained recent changes to the Annualized Earnings Exemption
program managed by the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation.
Monthly deductions are being replaced by annual limits. These changes could
result in negative impacts for recipients, especially for those who struggle with
long term planning.
Different approaches to responding to these changes were discussed. It was felt
that Maple Ridge may be impacted more than other communities due to the
local employment opportunities for those with developmental disabilities. The
Staff Liaison will investigate inviting a representative from the Ministry of Social
Development and Social Innovation to explain the changes and answer
questions.

Engineering has requested clarification from the Committee regarding the
installation of tactile surfaces at cross walks and on multi use pathways. Recent
installations in Maple Ridge have the tactile strips on the sidewalk but not on the
asphalt letdowns. After discussion it was agreed that the Staff Liaison should
notify Engineering that the Committee would like to see the tactile strips used on
the major let downs.
