The Minutes of the Regular Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee Meeting held via Zoom
teleconference and hosted in the Blaney Room at Maple Ridge City Hall on September 27, 2023, at 4:00
pm.

2. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA

Meeting dated July 20, 2023, be adopted.

4.1 Draft Heritage Plan Overview -Krista Gowan
K. Gowan, Planner 2, presented a draft Heritage Plan overview. Topics included: heritage myth
busters, Maple Ridge's heritage, why heritage matters, brief history of the Heritage Program, the
new Heritage Plan, and the five (5) big moves related to parks, recreation, and culture. Committee
members asked questions, engaged in discussion, and provided feedback.
5. NEW AND UNFINISHED BUSINESS
5.1 Urban Forest Management Strategy
C. Cheng, Urban Forest Planner, and A. Needoba, Principal, Senior Urban Forester, with Diamond
Head Consulting, presented an update on the Urban Forest Management Strategy. Topics
included: what is an urban forest and its benefits, tree canopies by land use, ecosystem services,
tree equity score, urban forest report card, and next steps. Committee members asked questions,
engaged in discussion, and provided feedback.
6. LIAISON UPDATES
6.1 Staff Liaison
V. Richmond provided an update on the following:
• Celebration of Maple Ridge's first beach volleyball facility
• Launch of the Maple Ridge Rec Facility Study
• Update on meeting with ALC Commissioners regarding the non-farm use application for
a fourth ice sheet
• Celebration of National Tree Day
6.2 Council Liaison
Councillor Carreras provided an update on the following:
• U BCM Convention 2023
• 2024 BC Summer Games and Maple Ridge 150
• Council's endorsement of the Strategic Active Transportation Plan
• Truth and Reconciliation Day -upcoming event at Memorial Peace Park
• Annual committee recruitment season
7. SUBCOMITTEE AND TASK FORCE UPDATES -NIL

Committee members provided updates and reports on issues and activities relating to parks,
recreation, and culture in the community.
