Staff track bear activity in parks and post signage to advise park patrons when there
have been sightings. Staff replace 6-8 regular trash receptacles each year with bear
proof cans, focusing in areas where there have been bear sightings such as
Whonnock, Ruskin and Allco Park. The cost of one bear proof can is approximately
$1,200 versus $13.50 for a regular receptacle. Park Caretakers are directed to
empty trash receptacles where there have been bear sightings each evening to deter
future visits. Staff also liaise with BC Parks Conservation Staff to report sightings.
David Boag advised that staff is currently working with the Communications and
Bylaws Departments to initiate a “Bear Aware” team to discuss programs to educate
the community on “bear awareness”.
