Adoption of the Agenda Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks & Leisure Services Commission Regular Meeting Minutes - Thursday, July 14, 2011 Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks & Leisure Services Commission Regular Minutes Page 2 of 3 R11-050 It was moved and seconded That the Agenda for July 14, 2011 be adopted with the following amendments; • Add Item 5.1 Bears CARRIED 2. Minutes of the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks & Leisure Services Commission Regular Meeting R11-051 It was moved and seconded That the Minutes of the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks & Leisure Services Commission Regular Meeting of June 9, 2011 be adopted as circulated. CARRIED 3. Delegations - Nil 4. Decision Items 4.1 McMyn Neighbourhood Park Concept Plan Mr. David Boag, Director of Parks & Facilities, reviewed the concept plans for the McMyn Neighbourhood Park with the Commission. R11-052 It was moved and seconded That the concept plan dated June 15, 2011 (Rev #2) as prepared by Durante Kreuk Ltd. and titled, Landscape Plan for McMyn Road Park, be endorsed and forwarded to Pitt Meadows Council. CARRIED 5. Discussion Items 5.1 Bears Commissioner Terri Smith asked whether Parks and Leisure Services have a policy or bylaw regarding bear proof garbage cans. David Boag, Director of Parks & Facilities advised that there is not a policy and provided an update on current practice. Mr. Boag noted that there are currently over 400 garbage cans in community parks and 42 are bear-proof. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks & Leisure Services Commission Regular Meeting Minutes - Thursday, July 14, 2011 Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks & Leisure Services Commission Regular Minutes Page 3 of 3 Staff track bear activity in parks and post signage to advise park patrons when there have been sightings. Staff replace 6-8 regular trash receptacles each year with bear proof cans, focusing in areas where there have been bear sightings such as Whonnock, Ruskin and Allco Park. The cost of one bear proof can is approximately $1,200 versus $13.50 for a regular receptacle. Park Caretakers are directed to empty trash receptacles where there have been bear sightings each evening to deter future visits. Staff also liaise with BC Parks Conservation Staff to report sightings. David Boag advised that staff is currently working with the Communications and Bylaws Departments to initiate a “Bear Aware” team to discuss programs to educate the community on “bear awareness”.
