The Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Community Heritage Commission, held in the
Blaney Room, at Municipal Hall, 11995 Haney Place, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on
Tuesday, Febrnary 7, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.

There being a quorum present, the Staff Liaison called the meeting to order at 7 :04 pm
and chaired the meeting to facilitate elections for the incoming Chair and Vice-Chair.
2. Adoption r~f the Agenda

3. Adoption of the Community Heritage Commission Minutes of Regular Meeting
R06-02 It was moved and seconded
That the Minutes of the Community Heritage Commission December 6, 2005
Regular Meeting and January 3, 2006 meeting be adopted as circulated.

5. Current Projects and Unfinished Business
5.1 Appointment of Chair, Vice Chair

Barbara Swanson was elected the new Chair and Jim Com1or the Vice-Chair.
5. 2 Formation of Committees
The Subcommittee formed to establish criteria for plaque locations will be chaired
by Jordana Feist with the help of Claus Andrup and Barbara Swanson. Jordana will
research photos and information for various heritage locations, including photos of
Japanese internment in Maple Ridge. The subcommittee will review and update
the preliminary list of suitable plaque locations from the January meeting.
5. 3 Heritage Strategy Update
The Whonnock Cemetery Celebration is planned for May 2006. The Staff Liaison
circulated a draft of the upcoming newsletter which will include photos from the
upcoming heritage event scheduled for February 16, 2006.
5.4 Plaque Locations and Strategies/or Designation
As discussed in item 5.2, the Sub-Committee designated to identify plaque
locations and strategies will report back at the next meeting. The proposed list
from the January meeting that the Sub-Committee will review includes:
• A plaque in Port Haney commemorating Japanese Internment
• The Maple Ridge Park at 232nd which is the first park in the community
• Davison's Pool area including the north side of the river and Cross's Park
• The Maple Ridge Cemetery

Proposed Thornhill Sign
A letter and sample sign design from the Thornhill family interested in donating a
"Welcome to Thornhill" sign for installation onto municipal land was distributed
and reviewed. Discussion regarding the proposal and its heritage value took place.

That supporting or not supporting the Thornhill sign does not fall into the
mandate of the Heritage Commission.

5.6 Museum Expansion Update-Feb.17 at The ACT
Jordana Feist invited the Commission and the public to the Museum Open House
presentation at the ACT on February 17, 2006 from 7 to 9:30 pm. The request for
fw1ds has been submitted to capital planning. Jordana reported the proposed
museum design is an exciting, innovative concept and shared the excitement
within the commtmity for the upcoming project.
5. 7 Business Plan Review for 2006
Items targeted from the business plan included the Whonnock Cemetery, plaques
and the Heritage A wards Event. The question of how often to host the heritage
event was tabled to the next meeting.
5. 8 Byrnes Road Update
Commissioner Helmi Braches expressed dismay that in two years, the Whonnock
Association has not received a response from the Commission or from Council in
regards to their request for the street name change, noting the swiftness in
carrying out other street names that have recently been changed, as identified in a
recent letter to the editor in the local paper. The staff liaison explained the
parameters around the recent Industrial/Jackson Street name change and
confirmed that efforts are being made to review the Byrnes Road request for an
expedient decision.

6. New and Unfinished Business
6.1 Heritage Awards Event
The Chair confirmed her plans to attend the Heritage Awards Event February 16th
and commission members were asked to forward photos to the staff liaison for a
pictorial display for the event. A press release will also be issued to the papers.
6.2 Updates to Website and Newsletter Distribution
The Committee Clerk will update pages within the District website, including the
posting of the Newsletter on the Heritage webpage. The staff liaison confirmed
the newsletter has been has been distributed within City Hall and the Library.
Commission members agreed to assist with newsletter distribution to:
• The Seniors' Centre on 224th Street (Sta.ffLiaison)
• The Whonnock Post Office (Helmi Braches)
• Schools (Rhys Clarke volunteered to distribute to the high schools)
• The Maple Ridge Historical Society Monthly Meetings (.Jordana, Claus, Jim)
• The Maple Ridge Museum and Haney House (.Jordana Feist)
Commission members will report back at next month's meeting, their success in
distributing to other suitable locations such as:
• The main post offices in Maple Ridge
• Local doctors' offices
• Public Health offices
• Other suggested locations
7. Committee Reports
The Awards Sub committee consisting of Commissioners Claus Andrup, Jim Connor and
Sheila Nickols will report on award winners in the closed portion of the meeting.
8. Correspondence -Nil
9. Next Meeting
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 7, 2006 with an agenda
deadline of February 20, 2006.

10. Motion to Move into Closed Session
R06-04 It was moved and seconded
That the Maple Ridge Community Heritage Commission move into a Closed
Meeting pursuant to 242 (a) personal information about an identifiable individual
who holds or is being considered for a position as an officer, employee or agent of
the municipality or another position appointed by the municipality;
CARRIED
The Regular Meeting ended at 8:07 p.m.
