The Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Community Heritage Commission, held in the
Blaney Room, at Municipal Hall, 11995 Haney Place, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on
Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.

5. Current Projects and Unfinished Business
5.1 Review ofAfeeting Protocol
The committee clerk reviewed meeting protocol.
5.2 Heritage Strategy Update
5.2.1 Awards Update
Sheila Nickols reported on the success of February's Heritage Event
which received good press coverage. Feedback included how beautiful
the signage was and discussion points included:
• The poster boards should be kept in perpetuity, to be displayed
throughout the c01mmmity, a smaller version made, transferred
to PDF format and posted on the web. Diana will contact the
library for display opportunities.
• The Commission will review the inclusion of building
nominations in the fall
• In the future, all former winners will receive a special
invitation.
5.2.2 Update Newsletter Distribution & Website
The c01mnittee clerk confirmed web updates including the addition of
the last newsletter. The staff liaison distributed the draft copy of the
current newsletter for feedback.

5. 2. 3 Upcoming Events
Saturday, May 20 is the date designated for the plaque unveiling for
the Norwegian Cemetery in Whonnock. I-Ielmi will draw up an
invitation list and anange the tent awning. Flowers and refreshments
will be arranged and a diagram with directions will be provided.
Diana will arrange for a cost summary.
The Heritage Tea arranged by the Maple Ridge Historical Society
takes place on April 1, from 1-4 p.m. at the Seniors' Activity Centre.
This event commemorates residents born in Maple Ridge before 1962.
Stantec Consulting has been hired to host visioning dates for the
Official Community Plan. The Staff Liaison and the Council Liaison
shared the imp01iance of the process. The first session is an evening
event on Monday, March 20, 2006 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The second
will be held on Saturday, March 25 , 2006 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
Both events will be hosted at Thomas Haney Secondary.
Business Plan Reviewfor 2006
Diana Hall will update with quarterly :financial su111n1aries.
Barbara Swanson reviewed the crisis with the trees on 124th being
covered in English Ivy which will destroy them. Councillor Craig
Speirs noted that the district is reviewing an invasive species strategy
and suggested a discussion with Bruce McLeod before the next
meeting to see if there's a good fit with some other work going on in
the district.
5.4 Whonnock Community Assoc. Request-Byrnes Rd. Name Change
The staff liaison reviewed a commission letter that was drafted for the chair's
signature wherein the commission responds to the Whonnock Association's
request for a street name change. The letter advises that a policy is being defined
which is why it has taken some time to respond; the street naming policy will
address street name changes, recognizing that CoLmcil has to pass policy.
5. 5 Review of Action Items List
Youth Member: Jordana will re-send the information she compiled to Diana,
including new interview questions that are more relevant to the youth position.

Plaque sub-committee -Jordana will research the list that was identified in
January and committee members will formalize into a motion for the next
meeting.
Members will pick up and help distribute the last newsletter (winter edition) and
will also edit the current draft of the spring edition, with comments back to Diana.
6. New and Unfinished Business
6.1 Robertson Cemetery
R06-06 It was moved and seconded
That the Maple Ridge Community Heritage Commission support Robertson
Cemetery being officially designated as a cemetery in the Land Titles Act and
in the Official Registry of Cemeteries in Victoria.

Diana will prepare the staff report for council.
6. 2 Hitching Post -corner of 2 3 211d
Councillor Craig Speirs advised the District has purchased this property and wants
to ensure the area is recognized and documented prior to demolition. Jordana will
take photos to create a visual record, and Craig will arrange a meeting time for a
walkabout. Any articles or furniture within the building that contain historical
value will be removed.
6.3 Turquoise House -22356 Selkirk
Jordana reported that unfortunately, demolition of this building took place before
the time capsule that was buried beneath it could be recovered; the Maple Ridge
Historical Society was promised it would be contacted prior to the house removal
but that did not happen. Both Councillor Speirs and the Staff Liaison will talk to
the Bylaw department to ensure that in future, demotion does not take place
without prior notice given to the historical society.
