Adoption of the Agenda Ros-01 It was moved and seconded That the Agenda for March 4, 2008 be adopted 3. Adoption of the Community Heritage Commission Minutes of Regular Meeting Ros-os It was moved and seconded CARRIED That the Minutes of the Community Heritage Commission dated February 5, 2008 Regular Meeting be adopted with the following change Councillor Speirs should be shown as Present CARRIED Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting Page 1 of 5 Community Heritage Commission Minutes Tuesday, March 4, 2008 Draft Minutes -Subject to approval 4. Delegations and Presentations -Nil 5. Current and Unfinished Business 5.1 Strategic Planning Process -Lisa Lisa Zosiak advised the Commission that Bob Parliament will be at the April 2008 meeting to help the Commission with their strategic planning process. Ms. Zosiak also advised that she will contact Val Patenauee, Museum Director of the Historical Society and Sandy Blue, Manager Economic Development to extend an invitation for the next Community Heritage Commission meeting. 5.2 Statements of Significance Project -Lisa Lisa Zosiak asked the Commission if they had any feedback on the Statements of Significance and also advised that she will ask Denise Cook Design to go ahead with what she presently has. 5.3 Plaque Unveiling Cloth -Lisa The Commission looked at the Plaque Unveiling Cloth and confirmed they would like to see the "Community Heritage Commission" logo larger and both logos balanced in size. 5.4 Heritage Strategy Project -Lynne Lynn Probyn distributed a list of residents and businesses that still exist and classified as a "Heritage Home" from Donald Luxton's work and proposed that a sub-committee be put together to go out and review the houses to ensure they still exist and approach the resident to see if they are interested in having a plaque on their home. Ms. Probyn also advised that the Commission will need to review the legalities of this project. Sarah Hossack, Sheila Nickols, and Lynn Probyn will be on the sub-committee. Councillor Speirs joined the meeting at 7:29 p.m. NOTE: Item 5.6 was discussed prior to 5.5 5.5 Empress Train -Craig Speirs Councillor Speirs advised that he is still waiting to hear back from the contact as to more details on when the Empress Train will be coming through Maple Ridge and will report back to the Commission once he has received this information. Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting Page 2 of 5 Community Heritage Commission Minutes Tuesday, March 4, 2008 Draft Minutes -Subject to approval 5.6 How to Increase Heritage Nominations (discussion) The .Commission discussed different ideas on how they can increase the nominations for the 2009 Heritage Awards Ceremony. Suggestions included: • More partnership with the Historical Society • Advertising through the Public Library's (Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows) • Contacting the Business Woman's AM group • Starting earlier in the year to plan the event • Tighter criteria, timeline, target groups (contact groups to make specific contacts) • Have a delegation prior to the event to talk about 'historical restoration' at a local church Lisa Zosiak will ask Bob Parliament to help identify a possible speaker to present on Historical Restoration at a meeting later this year. The Heritage Awards event will be advertised during the presentation event. The Commission agreed there should be a sub-committee; Lynn Probyn, Sheila Nickols, and Lisa Zosiak. The Commission will contact Jim Conner to confirm that he will continue to be on this sub-committee. 6. New Business 6.1 Hammond Unveiling Plaque/Sign Event Lisa Zosiak advised the Commission that Diana Hall will ensure the sign is available once a date for the unveiling event has been set. The Commission reviewed the plaque and agreed that the date for the plaque unveiling event would be Saturday, June 14th at Hammond Park. The Commission agreed to a sub-committee that would contact Katherine Baird for details on this event. The sub-committee is; Sarah Hossack and Jim Connor. 6.2 Heritage Tourism -Report on SFU Session February 15th -Lynne & Craig Lynne Probyn advised the Commission that the lecture was very informative and distributed a pamphlet to the Commission on the conference details. Councillor Speirs advised the Commission that the contact for the Tourism Society was also at this event. Lynn Probyn advised the Commission that there is a community Tourism Board located in Pitt Meadows and Ms. Probyn would like to see Maple Ridge have a Tourism Board as well. Councillor Speirs advised the Commission that currently Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows share a community tourism board that is located in Pitt Meadows and also Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting Page 3 of 5 Community Heritage Commission Minutes Tuesday, March 4, 2008 Draft Minutes -Subject to approval advised that the Commission is headed in the right direction for promoting heritage within our community. Councillor Speirs advised the Commission that the face of heritage tourism is going to change; and would like to see tourism and heritage come together. Once the process is finished and we have a tourism plan then after that we can facilitate some kind of meeting for serious groups. It was suggested that Lynn Probyn contact Sandy Blue, Manager of Economic Development to see what direction heritage is going within Maple Ridge . Councillor Speirs found this event really helpful and thought it supported what thoughts and direction this Commission is heading. Sheila Nickols advised that there are major problems with the Historical Society building. Lisa Zosiak will contact the parks & leisure Services Department to review the report that is being prepared. ACTION ITEM: The Committee Clerk was asked to add this to the next agenda. ACTION ITEM: Lynne Probyn will ask Sandy Blue to attend the next Heritage Commission meeting. 6.3 Budget 2008 6.3.1 Status and Review -Lisa Lisa Zosiak reviewed the current budget with the Commission members. 7. Committee Reports 7.1 Newsletter Helmi Braches advised the Commission that the next newsletter is being prepared now that will capture the Heritage Awards Ceremony and also asked the Commission if they had any other items they would like to include in this newsletter. The Commission would like to see the next Heritage Awards advertised in a future newsletter along with a report from the SFU Heritage Convention. Another idea for the next newsletter is a write up on the Spirit Dancer Canoe. 7.2 Plaques and Signs The Commission would like to consider updating the myth of "The Beast" and possibly a heritage plaque for this location in the fall. ACTION ITEM: The Committee Clerk was asked to add this item to the action item list. The Commission also discussed the idea of having a plaque at the cemetery and would like to consider having more than one plaque at the cemetery. Community Heritage Commission Regular Meeting Page 4 of5 ) Community Heritage Commission Minutes Tuesday, March 4, 2008 Draft Minutes -Subject to approval 7.3 Heritage Awards 7.3.1 Report on February 21st Event The Commission agreed that there were some disappointments in the nomination process but the event itself was very nice and Jim Connor did a great job as Master of Ceremonies. 7.4 Plaque Map -defer to the next meeting Councillor Speirs advised the Commission that at the last workshop he brought the idea of an on line map up with Rod Stott, Planning Department, and he confirmed that you can create an interactive historical map on line that will have several layers of information. Lisa Zosiak will contact Teresa Muir and David Cook for more information on this topic. 8. Correspondence 8.1 8.2 2008 Membership List -Tracy to include in the March agenda Heritage Here -Winter 2007/2008 Newsletter Sheila Nickols advised the Commission that the Heritage Tea will be held on Saturday, April 5th between 1:00 -4:00 pm at the Senior's Activity Center on 224th Street. 9. Next Meeting The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. and an agenda deadline of Monday, March 17, 2008. 10. Motion to Adjourn R08-09 It was moved and seconded That the regular meeting of the Maple Ridge Community Heritage Commission be adjourned.
