The Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Community Heritage Commission, held in the Blaney
Room, at Maple Ridge Municipal Hall, 11995 Haney Place Road, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.

The Regular Meeting of the Community Heritage Commission was called to order at 7:01
p.m.
2. Adoption of the Agenda

3. Minutes of June 3, 2008 Regular Meeting be adopted
ROS-16 It was moved and seconded
That the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of June 3, 2008 be adopted with the following
changes:
On page 1 change "Jan De Zeeuw" to "Jan de Zeeuw";
On page 4 (7.1) and page 5 (8.4) change "Jim Conner" to "Jim Connor"

6. Current and Unfinished Business
6.1 Statements of Significance Project -Lisa Zosiak
Lisa Zosiak advised that the Statement of Significance Project is progressing and the final draft
should be received in the very near future.
6.2 Heritage Tourism-Lynne Probyn
Lynne Probyn had nothing to report at this time and requested her name be deleted from the
Heritage Tourism item.
6.3 Benefits of Conserving the Heritage Home, Sept 23 Presentation, Lynne Probyn
Lynne Probyn advised the Commission that Leslie Gilbert is confirmed as the speaker at the
September 23rd, 2008 presentation of the Benefits of Conserving the Heritage Home. Ms. Probyn
sought honorary gift suggestions.

6.4 Conservation & Feasibility Plan for St. Andrew's Church -Lisa Zosiak
Lisa Zosiak gave an update to the Commission that the Conservation & Feasibility Plan for St.
Andrew's Church is progressing and that the funding grant has been approved by the Province.
Ms. Zosiak advised that there are a few issues being worked out between the consultant and the
Province in terms of some revisions that the Province has recently made to the process and
reporting format.
7. New Business
7.1 Heritage Commission Networking Conference -Jim Connor
Jim Connor advised that the Heritage Commission Networking Conference has been postponed
until November 29, 2008. Mr. Connor further advised that the Agenda and program for the
upcoming conference will be provided by Chris Gibson and will be forwarded to the Commission
members.
7.2 Heritage Strategy Stakeholders Workshop -Lisa Zosiak
Lisa Zosiak advised that the Heritage Strategy Stakeholders Workshop is on Thursday, September
4, 2008 in Agassiz.
7.3 BC Heritage Award Nomination
Sheila Nickols advised that the Historical Society is nominating Fred Braches for the BC. Heritage
Awards. The deadline is September 30, 2008. Ms. Nickols suggested that the Commission
endorse the nomination by providing a letter of support.

That the Community Heritage Commission write a letter of support for the nomination of
Fred Braches for the BC Heritage Awards
CARRIED
ACTION ITEMS: Jim Connor will write a letter of support to endorse the nomination of Fred
Braches.
Helmi Braches will provide details of Fred Braches' accomplishments.

8. Committee Reports
8.1 Newsletter
Helmi Braches advised that the summer edition of the newsletter has been completed and is about
to be released. Suggestions for possible topics were discussed and agreed that Heritage Tourism
and Leslie Gilbert's upcoming presentation should be covered.
ACTION ITEMS: Craig Speirs will take notes at the Heritage Stakeholder's Workshop.
Lisa Zosiak will create an article regarding the Conservation and Feasibility Plan and St.
Andrew's Church.
Sheila Nickols will report on Leslie Gilbert's presentation on the Benefits of Conserving the
Heritage Home.
Jim Connor will report on the Networking Conference in time for the winter issue.
The Commission discussed raising awareness of heritage and the current distribution of the
newsletter. Further discussion took place of possible new distribution locations. Lisa Zosiak
informed the Commission that she currently provides 20 copies to each location that is currently
on the mailing list.
ACTION ITEMS: Helmi Braches will contact the local schools to see if teachers would be
interested in receiving the newsletter, for those studying local heritage.
Ms. Zosiak will contact Haney House, Seniors Centre, The Act and the Ceed Centre.
Helmi Braches will compile a distribution list for Lisa Zosiak.
8.2 Heritage Awards
Lisa Zosiak circulated to the Commission the nomination forms for the Heritage Awards. Ms.
Zosiak advised that advertising for the awards will appear in the newspaper with a deadline of
Thursday, October 16, 2008.
8.3 Plaque Map
Jim Connor advised that the Plaque Map was contained in the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows
Outdoor Recreation Trails and Events Guide and extended thanks to Tammy Mciver for creating
the brochure.

8.4 Heritage Strategic Plan
Lisa Zosiak updated the Commission on the most recent conversations with Bob Parliament
regarding Context Planning and Strategic Planning. The Province has funding programs for both of
these processes that each contribute to the Heritage Strategic Plan. It was agreed that Lisa Zosiak
and Lynne Probyn would work together on the application.
ACTION ITEM: Committee Clerk to add the Heritage Strategic Plan to the October Agenda.

The correspondence was circulated and received by the Commission with no further discussion.
