REGULAR MEETING
The Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Social Planning Advisory Committee, held in the Blaney Room
at Maple Ridge Municipal Hall, 11995 Haney Place, Road, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on
Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.

The meeting was called to order 6:15 p.m.

sharing information. The consensus was that the new model needed to address change
in four areas: establish a monitoring function and maintain planning, demonstrated
leadership on homelessness in the region, continue and expand the funding role, and
operate as a strategic leadership committee with roots in the communities. Sue Wheeler
advised that the process will continue with consensus to explore the implications of a
Community Entity Model.
Healthy Communities Initiative -Fraser Health
Valerie Spurrell advised the Committee that this initiative was recommended by the
Lower Mainland Municipal Association; that every community create a local healthy
community initiative committee. This would require a partnership between Fraser Health
and the Municipality. Ms. Spurrell advised that the next step is to determine what this
will look like for this community. It was confirmed that the sub-committee will consist of
Candace Gordon, Cheryl Ashlie, Valerie Spurrell, Ian Brooks, Linda King and Sue Wheeler
Motion was moved and seconded
That the Social Planning Advisory Committee create an exploratory committee to look at
the recommendations of the Healthy Communities Initiatives and bring the
recommendations back to SPAC for endorsement.

Homelessness Action Week 2009 -October 16th Local Chili Harvest Event
Candace Gordon advised the Committee that the Local Chili Harvest Event will be held
on October 16th. Ms. Gordon also noted that in addition to lunch, "make-over" services
that will be available to those attending this event. Donations can be made at the Youth
Centre and The Caring Place. It was confirmed that Candace Gordon will send the food
ingredient list to the Social Planning Advisory Committee.
Sue Wheeler advised the Committee that a notice has gone out to all the schools to
participate in the food bank drive; website www.stophomelessness.ca and there are
curriculum resources for teachers to teach their students about homelessness.
5.4 Alouette Home Start Society's Supportive Housing Project; Public Hearing -October 20,
2009 at 7:00 p.m.
Sue Wheeler advised that this is a reminder that the Supportive Housing Project will go
to Public Hearing on October 20, 2009. Sue Wheeler also noted that she will confirm
with Sheila McLaughlin that she will be a delegation at the November 2009 Social
Planning Advisory Committee meeting.

Councillor Cheryl Ashlie advised that we need to start addressing the preventative
measures that are taking place for Homelessness Action
Katrina Elliot noted that at the last meeting, the BIA had indicated that they were
reviewing their membership at SPAC and would be determining if they would
continue. Ms. Elliot advised that the business community needs to be at the
table as we can 't address the social issues of the communities without them, and
that it is so critical to engage businesses in the Communities to ensure a healthy
sustainable community.
The committee discussed the importance of the business community
participation and possibility of approaching the Chamber of Commerce should
the BIA wish to discontinue their participation.

That the Social Planning Advisory Committee endorse the 2010 Update to Three
Year Business Plan.
