The Minutes of the Regular Public Art Steering Committee Meeting held via Zoom teleconference and
hosted in the Blaney Room at Maple Ridge City Hall on February 1, 2024, at 4:00 pm.

Committee members introduced themselves to the group.

E. Davies provided a general overview of Committee proceedings and functions.

Committee members discussed and voted on the chair and vice chair of the Public Art Steering
Committee.

5.4. 2024 Meeting Schedule
Due to scheduling conflicts, members requested an earlier start time for the meetings. Staff
will discuss internally and get back to committee members. Members voted to defer this item
until the next meeting.

6. LIAISON UPDATES
6.1. Staff Liaison
R. Brummer provided an update on the repairs to the Spirit of the Wood pieces at the Cam
Neely arena at Planet Ice, staff discussions with the developers at MacLean Homes for the
public art project at their Edge Street development and progress made on the Public Art
Policy Handbook.
6.2. Council Liaison
Councillor Carreras provided an update on the council budget, which was recently open to
community feedback, as well as public input now being open for the proposed Hammond
recreation centre.

7. TASK FORCES
7.1. MR150
R. Brummer provided updates about Maple Ridge 150. Call outs for artists have gone
out for the approved public art projects, including the postcard and neighbourhood
identity murals, the legacy frames and the performance art events.
7.2. Albion Community Centre
R. Brummer provided updates about the Albion Community Centre window mural
project.
7.3. Culture Map
R. Brummer provided an update about the culture map accordion-style pamphlet that is
now with the corporate communications team. Staff is hopeful it will be available for the
Earth Day celebrations in the spring.
7.4. Raymond House Artist in Residence
R. Brummer provided an update and laid out next steps about the Raymond House Artist
in Residence.

Committee members provided updates and reports on relevant events and activities related
to public art in the community.

Ears and Maple Ridge Park. We have a diverse population of roughly 730 students. The school grounds are

1. Description of organization
Yennadon Elementary is a kindergarten to grade 7 school located in Maple Ridge.
The school covers an extensive area includin g the main building, portables, and Hrn
annex. Yennadon is currently the largest elementary school in Maple Ridge with a
population of 730 students. The annex, the building which will host the mural, was
built in ·1952 to accommodate the growing population. The annex looks very much
the same as it did in the past, but now has a gym attached to it. In 199 3, the main
building was built. Today, Yennadon uses both the ann ex and main building as
school buildings. The annex was re novated inside and hosts several kindergarten
classes. The main building is situated on 128 Ave while the annex remains on 232
Street.
2. Project Description

b) Stuclents and staff 1Nill work with the artist, Jason Craft, to create a large mural
for tt1e front of the annex. Studen ts will help design tr1e artwork under each
w i ndow to strnw the wildlife founcl i n our community. Students will be able to

foster a love of the art s and their school community. It will also be visible to

B) Jason ha s consulted witt1 tt1e Yennadon staff previously about creating a mural
for the annex . He was the artist who completed murals at the main building.
Please see attached photos.
A) Jason will use paint that is durable for a variety of weather conditions.
B) The artwork is permanent.
C) The lifespan is 1 O years.
D) Upkeep will be cleaning and possible touch ups.
E) The mural extends from the outer front \Nall and wraps around the front door.

5. Project Buclget

6. Ttrn project will be evaluatecl by Hie community's positive re sponse from the artwork
installation. Hop efully, the staff 'Nill notice a recluction of speecling traffic as drivers
note H1at they are in a school zone .
4. Maintenance & Durability Considerations
