Agenda Approval R13-018 It was moved and seconded That the Agenda of the Regular Meeting of May 1, 2013 be adopted. R13-019 Approval of the April 3, 2013 Meeting Minutes It was moved and seconded ) _) That the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of April 3, 2013 be adopted. CARRIED 5.2 Membership asked for clarification of membership numbers for the next meeting. 4. Delegations & Presentations 4.1 RCMP Strategic Plan-Staff Sergeant Major Andrew Martin Staff Sergeant Major Andrew Martin gave an overview of the RCMP Strategic Plan for 2013 and the officers responsible for each area; drugs/organized crime, youth, social issues, crimes against persons and road safety. Committee members asked for clarification on traffic rules during pro-d-days during school times and yellow playground signs versus white playground signs. Staff Sergeant Major Andrew Martin will follow up with the committee to answer these questions. 4.2 EDI and Early Childhood Development Committee Initiatives -Roberta O'Brien Roberta O'Brien handed out bags to all SPAC members which contained multiple resources in the form of brochures and pamphlets used by Early Childhood Development and presented an overview of the Early Childhood Development Committee and the agencies that support ECD. Committee members asked how EDI (Early Development Instrument) is implemented within our schools. Ms. O'Brien stated that assessments are made of children in February after the child starts kindergarten. Committee members asked for further clarification regarding how many vulnerable children there are in our community. Ms. O'Brien will forward more information to this committee. 5. New Business 5.1 Dignity Project Funding Danielle Pope updated committee members on the Substance Misuse Prevention Committee and the Harm Reduction Sub-Committee which has received funding for a Social Planning Advisory Committee Regular Minutes Page2of5 Social Planning Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Minutes May 1, 2013 -Draft 5.2 dignity project entitled "Me to We". A coordinator will be collecting and analyzing 'stories of compassion' to distill actionable behaviours that can be creatively promoted throughout Maple Ridge using established social media mechanisms. This engagement will also lead to identifying local 'champions' for future district compassion charter work. Maple Ridge Community Foundation Dinner Danielle Pope updated committee members on the Community Foundation Dinner where the Community Chest was unveiled raising $1,600 in donations during the evening. The Community Chest will offer support to individuals and families that are in need of 'one time' assistance strengthening their capacity to respond and react to change. It was also reported that an additional $1,000 in donations has been received by the Community Foundation from the Great Canadian Casino Company. 6. Unfinished Business 6.1 Meeting with Randy Kamp Update Danielle Pope updated the committee that Fraser Health has responded to the letter requesting that a representative from their organization attend the meeting with MP Kamp. This meeting with MP Kamp will be taking place Thursday, May 17 with Councillor Ashlie, Darrel Pilgrim, Stephanie Ediger and Sherry Mumford in attendance. 6.2 Vibrant Downtown Task Force Update Danielle Pope updated committee members on the Vibrant Downtown Task Force which has been meeting every two weeks and recently adopted a terms of reference. The Vibrant Downtown Task Force recently performed a downtown walkabout which was very successful with over sixteen participants including four youths who performed an audit of Memorial Peace Park and 224th Street from Dewdney Trunk Road to Lougheed Hwy. This audit focused on lighting, safety, assets/strengths, and what's missing. Terms of reference were distributed by Committee members. 7. Committee Reports 7.1 Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Katzie Community Network Update Candace Gordon reported that the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Katzie Community Network completed a strategic planning session in April. Ms. Gordon stated that this planning session determined a Healthy Community Plan is needed. John Heffernan reported a very busy spring at Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living with double the kids enrolling in camps during spring break. Candace Gordon stated that Earth Day was a huge success in Memorial Peace Park with over 3,000 attendees. Ms. Gordon also reminded all members that the Haney Farmers Market will begin May 11. Sarah Nelson gave an overview of how budgets are being restructured at the School District office and how school enrollments are down. Ms. Nelson stated that School District 42 is sitting in a better position budget-wise within the province than most other school districts. Ms. Nelson also stated that interest in French is becoming prominent with parents in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Arlana Kuzyk reported that the Healthy Community Partnership will be attending the Healthy Living Trade Show May 12 at the Langley Events Centre. If any committee members would like to attend, please RSVP Ms. Kuzyk. Bob Goos reported that Generation Squeeze is hosting a session call Gen Squeeze Coffee House at Kanaka Creek Coffee on May 10th from 6:00-8:00 pm. Correspondence 9.1 The Cost of Homelessness by Stephen Gaetz 9.2 Media release: Strong Leadership, Focus Resources Required to Bolster Youth Mental Health Services 10. Adjournment -8:48 pm. 11.
