ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA The agenda was approved with the following addition: 4.5 Announcement from the Premier of British Columbia re: the RCMP 5.1 Albion Ferry -G. Mowatt Council Workshop Minutes February 16, 2009 Page 2 of 4 2. MINUTES R/09-046 Minutes February 2, 2009 It was moved and seconded That the minutes of the Council Workshop Meeting of February 2, 2009 be adopted as circulated. CARRIED Note: Mayor Daykin acknowledged the passing of RCMP Inspector Jim Wakely. He advised that the local RCMP detachment is working on putting together a memorial service for Inspector Wakely in Maple Ridge and details will be forthcoming. 3. PRESENTATIONS AT THE REQUEST OF COUNCIL 4. UNFINISHED AND NEW BUSINESS 4.1 256th Street Sewer Extension Update The Municipal Engineer gave a PowerPoint presentation providing an update on the status of the 256 Street sanitary sewer extension and outlining the next steps required to proceed with the project. The Chief Administrative Officer provided information on the agreement between the District and the Provincial Government for the construction of a sanitary sewer extension that will accommodate the expansion of the two Provincial correctional institutions located in Maple Ridge. R/09-047 256 Street Sewer Extension Update It was moved and seconded That the update on the 256th Street Sewer Extension be received. CARRIED 4.2 Economic Development Update The Manager of Economic Development gave a PowerPoint presentation providing an update on the Economic Development Department, the services provided by the department and outlining the 2009 Work Plan. Council Workshop Minutes February 16, 2009 Page 3 of 4 4.3 LRSP Committee Meeting Update Mayor Daykin reported on a Metro Vancouver Regional Planning Committee meeting. He advised that a report on Metro Vancouver's Draft Regional Growth Strategy was presented at the meeting and advised on an "option" chosen by the Committee in the further development of the strategy. A copy of the draft Regional Growth Strategy will be provided to all members of Council. The Director of Planning advised that she will ask for clarification from Metro Vancouver on the process to provide municipal input on the strategy. 4.4 LMLGA Resolutions Resolutions for the Lower Mainland Local Government Association 2009 Annual General Meeting and Conference in May 2009 were discussed. The Corporate Officer advised on the timeline for the submission of resolutions. Councillor Ashlie suggested that the Lower Mainland Local Government Association be encouraged to invite the British Columbia School Trustees Association to its upcoming events with the intent of building of a relationship between the two associations. R/09-048 LMLGA Invitation To BC School Trustees Assoc It was moved and seconded That a letter be sent to the Lower Mainland Local Government Association (LMLGA) recommending that the LMLGA extend invitations to the British Columbia School Trustees Association Board of Directors to attend its annual convention. CARRIED 4.5 Announcement from the Premier of British Columbia re: the RCMP Mayor Daykin provided details of the announcement by Premier Gordon Campbell to dedicate significant monies toward an RCMP initiative to deal with the recent gang violence in British Columbia. Council Workshop Minutes February 16, 2009 Page 4 of 4 5. CORRESPONDENCE 5.1 Albion Ferry -G. Mowatt Mayor Daykin referred to an e-mail dated February 11, 2009 from Mr. Graham Mowatt requesting a declaration of support from the District of Maple Ridge for the continuation of the Albion Ferry service and suggested that Council provide such a letter. R/09-049 Albion Ferry Service It was moved and seconded That letters be sent to local MP Randy Kamp and to local MLAs Randy Hawes and Michael Sather supporting their efforts to pursue, along with Mr. Graham Mowatt, the continuation of the Albion Ferry in some form; That the letters acknowledge Mr. Mowatt's stated position that there will be no financial contribution required from the taxpayers of Maple Ridge; and further That the letters also acknowledge the District of Maple Ridge's past efforts to maintain the ferry service.
