ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA The agenda was adopted with the addition of: 4.3 Dog Bylaw & SPCA 4.4 Lorraine Bates, Relief Effort for Tsunami Victims 2. CARRIED Council Workshop Minutes January 3, 2005 Page 2 of 4 3. PRESENTATIONS A T THE REQUEST OF COUNCJL -Nil 4. UNFINISHED AND NEW BUSINESS 4.1 Report on Fireworks Task Force The Community Safety Officer gave a Power Point presentation providing an update on the work of the Fireworks Task Force. A copy of the presentation was circulated at the meeting. It was the consensus of Council that staff be directed to prepare a bylaw banning fireworks in Maple Ridge and that appropriate businesses be notified of this direction. ACTION RE QURIED Staff is to prepare a bylaw that would ban fireworks in Maple Ridge but permit the opportunity for professional fireworks displays in the community. Appropriate businesses are to be notified of this action. Note: Item 4.2 was dealt with following item 4.4 4.2 Discussion of Council Remuneration 2006-2008 The Director of Communications and Human Resources suggested that staff could prepare a report for Council that would include information on compensation smvey data from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities ("FCM), analysis of a review conducted by another Lower Mainland community and information on any other methods being used to determine Council remuneration. It was the consensus of Council that staff be directed to prepare a report for presentation to Council in February on Council remuneration and technological support. ACTION REQUIRED Staff is to prepare a report for presentation to Council in February on Council remuneration and technological support. ' i I Council Workshop Minutes January 3, 2005 Page 3 of 4 4.3 Dog Bylaw and SPCA Referring to an incident in Maple Ridge where a toddler was killed in his home by dogs, Council requested that staff prepare a report outlining the regulations that are in place in Maple Ridge, and the procedures that are in place at the SPCA to deal with vicious dogs. ACTION REQUIRED 4.4 Staff is to prepare a report outlining the regulations that are in place in Maple Ridge, and the procedures that are in place at the SPCA, to deal with vicious dogs. Lorraine Bates, Relief Effo rt for Tsunami Victims Mayor Morse advised that Lorraine Bates has expressed a desire to coordinate a community effort to provide aid to the count1ies affected by the tsunami that struck the South Pacific on December 26. It was the consensus 9f Council that Lorraine Bates be notified that Council is supportive of her offer to coordinate a community response to the recent disaster in the South Pacific . Councillor Gordon indicated that FCM sponsors a program that builds water systems in developing countries. She suggested that she could research this program to see if it would offer long term assistance to those countries affected by the tsunami. The District could assist by providing information on the program to citizens. She noted that several years ago the District included information on an FCM fundraising program in with tax notices. ACTION REQUIRED 5. Mayor Morse is to advise Lorraine Bates of Council's support of her offer to coordinate a community effort to assist the South Pacific countries affected by the tsunami.
