City of Maple Ridge Agricultural Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes April 25, 2024 The Minutes of the Regular Agricultural Advisory Committee Meeting held virtually and hosted in the Blaney Room at Maple Ridge City Hall on April 25, 2024, at 7:00 pm. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 3.ADOPTION OF THE MINUTES R/2024-AAC-009 It was moved and seconded That the minutes of the Agricultural Advisory Committee meeting dated February 22, 2024, be adopted as circulated. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 3.1 Agricultural Advisory Committee Minutes April 25, 2024 Page 2 of 3 4.DELEGATIONS 5.NEW AND UNFINISHED BUSINESS 5.1. Agricultural Website Update A.Giovanni provided an overview of proposed ideas for the update to the Agriculturalwebsite. Ideas included: use clear examples of statements; link pertinent policies andpermit applications specific to Maple Ridge, the lower mainland, and British Columbia;develop a summary/plain language guide to the Agricultural Reserve Plan; provideinformation relevant to a variety of interest groups; identify current land uses in MapleRidge’s Agricultural Land Reserve; promote events and initiatives to enhance local foodsecurity; include a local farm/agricultural map; user friendly and visually attractivewebsite layout. Committee members asked questions and engaged in discussion. 5.2. Speaker Series – Japanese Beetle A. Rieu provided information about a presentation from T. Kimoto, Survey Biologist,Canadian Food Inspection Agency on the Japanese Beetle to the Pitt MeadowsAgricultural Advisory Committee. Committee members asked questions and engaged indiscussion. R/2024-AAC-010 It was moved and seconded THAT the Staff Liaison will contact T. Kimoto, Survey Biologist, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, to provide a delegation to the Committee on the topic of the Japanese Beetle, with a delegation date and time to be determined. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 6.LIAISON UPDATES 6.1. Staff Liaison A.Rieu provided information about the new City of Maple Ridge website launch nextweek, and upcoming seasonal water shortages and restrictions. 6.2. Council Liaison Councillor A. Yousef noted last Saturday was Earth Day. This Saturday is the Farmers Market opening day and the torch lighting for the 2024 BC Summer Games. 7.TASK FORCE UPDATE 7.1. Food Garden Contest A.Rieu provided an update on the 2024 Food Garden Contest, which would openshortly. A budget for the prizes needed to be set by the Committee. Committeemembers asked questions and engaged in discussion. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 3.ADOPTION OF THE MINUTES 4.DELEGATIONS 5.NEW AND UNFINISHED BUSINESS 5.1. Food Garden Contest A.Rieu provided an update on the 2024 Food Garden Contest and stated that at the previous AAC meeting, held on April 25, 2024, members voted to approve a budget of $2250, with a prize money allocation of $1000 for first prize, $750 for second prize, and $500 for third prize. 3.2 Agricultural Advisory Committee Minutes June 4, 2024 Page 2 of 2 Upon review of the Agricultural Advisory Committee budget, Staff noted that there was not enough in the budget for the approved prize amounts after accounting for the newspaper advertising that is needed to promote the contest. Committee members proposed new prize amounts, which will be finalized at a future committee meeting. R/2024-AAC-013 It was moved and seconded THAT motion R/2024-AAC-011 pertaining to the budget of the 2024 Food Garden Contest and prizes be rescinded. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY R/2024-AAC-014 It was moved and seconded THAT a budget of up to $1500 be approved for the 2024 Food Garden Contest CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 6.LIAISON UPDATES - Nil 7.TASK FORCE UPDATE 8.QUESTION PERIOD FOR THE PUBLIC - NIL 9.ROUNDTABLE - Nil 10.ADJOURNMENT – 4:20 pm Bhupinder Johar, Chair /ed Metro Vancouver staff have initiated an update to the Regional Food System Strategy (RFSS), the first update since its endorsement in 2011. This update is intended to connect all segments and sectors of the region’s food system, including member jurisdictions and local First Nations, in meaningful dialogue to understand the issues, challenges and successes each sector has experienced over the past 13 years. The update will also include developing a shared vision and goals and establishing actions and a strategic direction to continue to support a healthy, sustainable food system. Phase 1 – Background Preparation of the update, completed in 2023, included completing a comprehensive literature review, identifying existing food system challenges, completing an audit of the existing RFSS, preparing an engagement framework, and identifying potential stakeholder and partner participants. Phase 2 – Engagement, now underway, will comprise the main component of engagement in the update process. Results of Phase 2 will inform the preparation of the update to the RFSS, intended to take place during the final phase, Phase 3 – Document Preparation, which is anticipated to be completed mid-2025. Metro Vancouver staff are in the process of retaining a consultant to assist in completing Phase 2. Invitations to upcoming engagement events will be forthcoming over the course of 2024 and into 2025.
