City of Maple Ridge Public Art Steering Committee Meeting Minutes April 4, 2024 The Minutes of the Regular Public Art Steering Committee Meeting held via Zoom teleconference and hosted in the Council Chambers at Maple Ridge City Hall on April 4, 2024, at 3:00 pm. COMMITTEE MEMBERS PRESENT Councillor Judy Dueck Alternate Council Liaison Wayne Bissky, Chair Architect Dana Bates Artist Gina Rubin Leblanc Artist Courtney Miller Arts Council Representative Leanne Koehn Member at Large STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT Russ Brummer Manager of Art, Culture and Events Emily Davies Committee Clerk ABSENT Councillor Korleen Carreras Council Liaison 1.CALL TO ORDER – 3:11 pm 1.1. Land Acknowledgement W. Bissky called the meeting to order and provided the land acknowledgement. 2.APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA R/2024-PASC-010 It was moved and seconded That the April 4, 2024, Public Art Steering Committee agenda be approved as circulated. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 3.ADOPTION OF THE MINUTES R/2024-PASC-011 It was moved and seconded That the minutes of the Public Art Steering Committee meeting dated February 1, 2024, be adopted. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 3.0 Public Art Steering Committee Minutes April 4, 2024 Page 2 of 4 4.DELEGATIONS 4.1. Artist in Residence Update – Colleen Brown Artist in residence, C. Brown, provided Committee members with an update on theactivities she has participated in over the last 6 months. She highlighted Maple Ridgeresidents’ enthusiastic participation in the arts and gave special acknowledgement to herwork with R. Brummer. C. Brown also provided information about a forthcomingabsurdist-style play, featuring music and dance, being developed and to be performed atthe Albion Community Centre at the end of her residence. C. Brown provided feedback on the artist in residence contracts. Staff will discuss andreview internally. 4.2. Business Improvement Association The Business Improvement Association Beautification Revitalization Committee appealed to the Public Art Steering Committee to collaborate on an initiative to have murals painted in alleys in the downtown core. They noted that while the Maple Ridge BIA have done several murals around town, they do not have artist contacts and are not artists themselves, so they would like to reach out to the Public Art Committee to foster that relationship and collaborate. They suggested the possibility of themes for the murals or partnering with local high schools to get students involved. Committee members asked questions and engaged in conversation. R/2024-PASC-012 It was moved and seconded That the Public Art Steering Committee discuss a collaboration with the Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association Beautification Revitalization Committee at the June 6, 2024 meeting CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 5.NEW AND UNFINISHED BUSINESS 5.1. 2024 Meeting Schedule Committee members discussed the 2024 meeting schedule. At the February meeting,members carried a motion to defer this conversation to the April meeting, to allow staffan opportunity to investigate the option of moving the meeting time to bestaccommodate members. Staff provided committee members with an update andpresented alternate meeting dates and times. Public Art Steering Committee Minutes April 4, 2024 Page 3 of 4 R/2024-PASC-013 It was moved and seconded That the Public Art Steering Committee adopt the 2024 Meeting Schedule as follows: February 1, 2024 at 4pm April 4, 2024 at 3pm June 6, 2024 at 4 pm September 5, 2024 at 4pm November 7, 2024 at 4 pm CARRIED 5.2. Yennadon Elementary School Mural Project R.Brummer introduced a mural project financing request received from YennadonElementary. Committee members asked questions and engaged in conversation. Staff willgather more information and bring their findings back to the committee at the nextmeeting so they can further discuss and vote on this item. R/2024-PASC-014 It was moved and seconded That staff gather more information and bring their findings back to the Public Art Steering Committee to further discuss at the June 6, 2024, meeting. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 6.LIAISON UPDATES 6.1. Staff Liaison R.Brummer provided an update on the upcoming Cultural Collective meeting onApril 10. 6.2. Council Liaison Councillor Dueck, Alternate Council Liaison, provided an update on Sparkle Week, noting that Mayor and Council will be participating in the Sparkle Week clean-up. She also noted that Council will be giving first reading to the budget at the next Council Meeting (April 9, 2024). 7.TASK FORCES 7.1. MR150 R.Brummer provided updates about Maple Ridge 150, noting that preparation isunderway for the four projects endorsed by the Committee, including a Paint-by-Number Mural project, Placemaking Performance Art, and large outdoor framesidentifying natural beauty landscapes. Albion Community Centre R.Brummer provided updates about the Albion Community Centre window muralproject, noting that plans for the unveiling event will begin soon. 7.3. Culture Map R.Brummer provided an update about the culture map accordion-style pamphlet,with the hope that it will be ready to be circulated ahead of Maple Ridge 150 events. 7.4. Raymond House Artist in Residence R.Brummer provided an update and laid out next steps about the Raymond HouseArtist in Residence. An open house was held in March, the application reviewprocess has begun, and staff hope to have a new artist by late spring or earlysummer. 8.QUESTION PERIOD FOR THE PUBLIC E.Chesnel inquired as to whether there was a newsletter, committee, group, thatcentralizes information for artists in the City. R. Brummer will get in contact with themember of the public to follow up on this question and provide them with moreinformation. 9.ROUNDTABLE Committee members provided updates and reports on relevant events and activitiesrelated to public art in the community. 10.ADJOURNMENT – 4:22 pm Wayne Bissky, Chair /ed
