HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts and Cultural Plan - 4.13.pdfArts Cultural Plan - 4.13.doc Date Printed: 2002-09-13 Page 1 of 1 Policy 4.13 Incorporated 12 September, 1874 CORPORATION OF THE DISTRICT OF MAPLE RIDGE TITLE: ARTS AND CULTURAL PLAN POLICY NO. 4.13 APPROVAL DATE: November 12, 1996 POLICY STATEMENT: · That Council demonstrate its belief in the importance of arts and culture to the community by formally adopting the Arts and Cultural Policy and Plan and by incorporating the Arts and Cultural Policy and Plan into the Official Community Plan. · That Council appoint an Arts and Culture Steering Committee to implement the Arts and Cultural Policy and Plan. · That Council demonstrate its belief in the importance of arts and culture to the community by formally adopting the Arts and Cultural Policy and Plan and by incorporating the Arts and Cultural Policy and Plan into the Official Community Plan. · That Council appoint an Arts and Culture Steering Committee to implement the Arts and Cultural Policy and Plan. · That Council encourage and support in whatever ways it can the planning and organization of festivals and special events involving the arts as a way of celebrating community. · That Council develop a public arts policy based on the recommendations outlined in the Arts and Cultural Policy and Plan. · That Council adopt design guidelines for the future development and redevelopment of the downtown core to give the area an overall, coherent sense of design, including the preservation of heritage structures and spaces. · That Council acknowledges the role of and include youth in planning the future of the arts in our community. · That Council commit itself to a timetable for the construction of a multi-purpose arts centre that will be a joint undertaking of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, with provisions for meaningful participation of artists and arts organizations and general public in its planning and design. · That Council in the intervening time, until a new arts centre is ready, assist artists and arts organizations in securing improved facilities. · That Council maintain its present level of financial support for the arts and culture and regard this commitment as a foundation on which to build additional resources as they are available, subject to an annual budget review. PURPOSE: The purpose of this policy is to satisfy the 1992 Council resolution relating to the establishment of an arts policy. This policy will provide a general sense of direction, commitment, and vision for the arts and culture in our area. DEFINITIONS: The policy statements refer to an Arts and Cultural Plan that will give direction, clarify roles and build community partnerships to maximize existing and future resources. The plan refers to a series of 27 goals that are accompanied by preliminary strategies that will be implemented by a steering committee as appointed by Council.
