CARRIED Council Minutes May 26, 2009 Page 3 of 17 600 PRESENTATIONS AT THE REQUEST OF COUNCIL – Nil 700 DELEGATIONS 701 Maple Ridge Recycling Society Update -Carol Botting, President, Board of Directors Ms. Botting gave a PowerPoint presentation outlining changes to the Recycling Society’s weekly blue box pickup schedule taking effect June 1, 2009. 702 Residents for Smart Shopping -R. Watkins and L. Sofarelli Ms. Sofarelli introduced the “Residents for Smart Shopping” group. She spoke to the history of the group, how it was formed and its philosophy. Ms. Sofarelli provided reasons why the “Residents for Smart Shopping” group is advocating for retail development in the Albion Flats area. 800 UNFINISHED BUSINESS 801 TransLink Resolutions Deferred from the Council Workshop meeting of May 25, 2009 Mayor Daykin explained the background behind the proposed resolutions for TransLink. 801.1 Port Haney West Coast Express Station R/09-239 TransLink – Port Haney West Coast It was moved and seconded Express Station That the Mayor write a letter to TransLink stating that the District of Maple Ridge will not accept the suggested proposal to close the Port Haney West Coast Express Station when the new Albion Station is operational as the Port Haney Station is critical to achieving the goals of our Downtown Action Plan and densifying our town centre. CARRIED Council Minutes May 26, 2009 Page 4 of 17 801.2 Albion Ferry Dock R/09-240 TransLink Albion Ferry Dock It was moved and seconded That the Mayor write a letter to TransLink stating that TransLink not proceed to decommission or sell the existing Albion Ferry dock and associated infrastructure pending the outcome of the Albion Area Plan which will consider the potential long term use of the dock facility and access to the Fraser River. CARRIED 802.3 Rebuilding Portion of Roadway R/09-241 TransLink Rebuilding Portion It was moved and seconded Of Roadway That the Mayor write a letter to TransLink requesting that TransLink confirm that the portion of 128 Avenue from 210 Street to 232 Street will be rebuilt to match the standard of the newly constructed roadway west of 210 Street. He also advised that developers are required to hire qualified consultants to work on stormwater management plans. He announced that the work being done on 224th Street was close to completion and that volunteer groups have been involved in the cleanup of the downtown area. Mayor Daykin attended the Silver Valley Spring Fling and officially cut the ribbon for the opening of the new playground in Maple Ridge Park. He also attended New Westminster’s 150 year celebration. Mayor Daykin reminded residents that June 1 to June 7 is Seniors’ Week. He advised that June 14 will be the official opening of the Golden Ears Bridge for pedestrians and June 16 for vehicles. He encouraged the public to attend the Operating Engineers Open House on June 19. 1500 COUNCILLORS’ REPORTS Councill Councillor Ashlie or No report Councillor Ashlie commented on the paramedics strike. Council Minutes May 26, 2009 Page 16 of 17 Councillor Dueck Councillor Dueck participated in a tour of the Pitt Meadows Airport sponsored by the Pitt Meadows Airport Society. She also attended the opening of the Randy Herman Community Safety Building. Councillor Hogarth Councillor Hogarth attended a tour of the Pitt Meadows Airport, an Economic Development Committee meeting and a meeting of the Municipal Advisory Committee on Accessibility Issues. He advised that Accessibility Awards will be held on June 1 at the Pitt Meadows Recreation Centre. Councillor Hogarth encouraged residents to volunteer for the BC Disability Games. Councillor Speirs Councillor Speirs attended the Silver Valley Spring Fling in Maple Ridge Park and the opening of the Randy Herman Community Safety Building. He advised that June 14 is the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion Event. He also encouraged residents to attend the SPCA Open House on May 30. Councillor Morden No report Councillor King Councillor King attended the ‘Livable Cities’ Conference in Portland, Oregon. She shared photos taken in Portland which highlighted the city’s public transit system. 1600 OTHER MATTERS DEEMED EXPEDIENT – Nil 1700 NOTICES OF MOTION AND MATTERS FOR FUTURE M MEETINGS EETINGS – Nil 1800 QUESTIONS FROM THE PUBLIC Paula Panek Ms. Panek asked that if Council is requesting clarification from Metro Vancouver on rural designation in the Regional Growth Strategy why is clarification on the term urban not being sought as well. Mayor Daykin advised that a public meeting attended by Mr. Johnny Carline, CAO of Metro Vancouver, to further discuss the regional growth strategy is scheduled for June 16 at 7:00 p.m. Council Minutes May 26, 2009 Page 17 of 17 Ms. Panek stated that the Official Community Plan reflects the community process and asked about the origin for the need to change existing agricultural designations to urban in the draft Metro Vancouver plan in the expectation of a future plan. Betty von Hardenb Hardenberg rg Ms. von Hardenberg asked if the public will have the opportunity to ask questions at the meeting being attended by Mr. Carline. Mayor Daykin advised that the meeting on June 16 will follow the same format as a Council Workshop. Ken Knechtel Mr. Knechtel noted that the resolution pertaining to funding to expand 128 Avenue from 224 Street to 232 Street should include Abernethy Way. Ken Hemminger Mr. Hemminger asked if annual reports on progress in tree planting from Ecosystem Restoration Associates Inc. are available. He expressed that an agrologist report and hydrologist report should accompany applications for properties applying for removal from the Agricultural Land Reserve. Bernice Rolls Ms. Rolls asked what will happen to the Maple Ridge downtown area if another shopping centre is built elsewhere. She also asked when Council will follow what is stated in the Official Community Plan pertaining to the development of neighbourhoods. Ms. Rolls wished to know why Council is not passing along the Environmentally Sensitive Mapping to Metro Vancouver. 1900 ADJOURNMENT -9:14 p.m. _______________________________ E.
