CARRIED 600 PRESENTATIONS AT THE REQUEST OF COUNCIL 601 Awards to Ridge Meadows RCMP Officers -Superintendent Dave Walsh, Officer In Charge, Ridge Meadows RCMP Superintendent Walsh presented Ridge Meadows RCMP officers recently receiving awards and commendations for their service to the community. Awards for recognition for a record number of drunk driving arrests were presented to Constables Kyle Sametz, Tony Eeftink, Mitch Gordon, Glen Porter and Patrick Russell. Commanding Officer’s commendations for exemplary service and bravery were presented to Corporal Dave Ewert and Constables Michael Turner, Amanda Priest, Jodi Lymburner and Peter MacDonald. Council Minutes May 11, 2010 Page 3 of 14 700 DELEGATIONS 701 Welco Welcome Wagon me -80 80th th Year Anniversary -Kay Thomas Ms. Thomas spoke to Welcome Wagon’s 80th Year Anniversary and explained the programs available through the greeting service. She announced that the District of Maple Ridge received a “Community of the Year” award for the 60,000 to 100,000 population category at Welcome Wagon’s Annual Spring Conference and thanked all those contributing to this honour. She presented Mayor and Council with the award received at the conference. 702 Silver Valley Association – Silver Valley Festival Presentation and Thank You to Council -Donn York, Peter Tam Mr. York announced that the 3rd Annual Silver Valley Spring Festival will be held on May 22, 2010. Mr. Tam gave a PowerPoint presentation outlining events to be held during the Silver Valley Spring Festival. 703 Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition – Bike to Work Week -Rick Halas Mr. Halas gave a PowerPoint presentation providing information on Bike-To-Work Week which will take place from May 31 to June 6. CARRIED Councillor Morden -OPPOSED 1105 Municipal Equipment Purchase – One Street Sweeper and One Tandem Axle Dump Truck Staff report dated April 27, 2010 recommending that the contract for the purchase of one street sweeper with a catch basin cleaner boom attachment and accessories be awarded to Cubex Limited and that the contract for the purchase of one tandem dump truck and accessories be awarded to First Truck Centre. R/2010-271 Award of Contract Municipal It was moved and seconded Equipment That the contract for the purchase of one Street Sweeper complete with catch basin cleaner boom attachment, and accessories be awarded to Cubex Limited, Surrey, BC and further that the District of Maple Ridge enter into a contract to purchase the equipment for $187,042.05 including extended warrantee and optional items plus applicable taxes of approximately $20,040.17; and further That the contract for the purchase of one Tandem Dump Truck and accessories be awarded to First Truck Centre, Vancouver, BC and further that the District of Maple Ridge enter into a contract to purchase the equipment for $186,055.00 including extended warrantee and optional items plus applicable taxes of approximately $22,326.60. CARRIED Council Minutes May 11, 2010 Page 13 of 14 1300 RELEASE OF ITEMS FROM CLOSED COUNCIL – Nil 1400 MAYOR’S REPORT Mayor Daykin spoke with Grade 9 students at Garibaldi Secondary School. He attended the opening of the 6th year of the Farmers’ Market and a BBQ Fundraiser for Crohns' & Colitis Foundation at M&M Meats. He thanked M&M Meats for their fundraising efforts. Mayor Daykin also attended the Ridge Meadows Educational Foundation Annual Fundraising Dinner. 1500 COUNCILLORS’ REPORTS Councillor King Councillor King attended the Port Coquitlam May Day Parade on behalf of Mayor Daykin, the opening of the 6th year of the Farmers’ Market, the Ridge Meadows Educational Foundation Annual Fundraising Dinner and the Turkish celebration of EID at the Maple Ridge Library. She also attended a meeting of the Social Planning Advisory Committee, a Metro Vancouver Waste Management Committee Meeting and participated in “The Get Out Migration”, a walk in support of wild salmon and in the Vancouver Sun Run. Councillor Morden Councillor Morden attended regular meetings. He advised on a program for new RCMP recruits called CAPTURE designed to allow recruits to identify issues and provide solutions. Councillor Speirs Councillor Speirs participated in “The Get Out Migration”, a walk in support of wild salmon. He attended the Ridge Meadows Educational Foundation Annual Fundraising Dinner, a UBC Research Forest BBQ, the Race the Ridge bicycle event and a meeting of the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services Commission. Councillor Hogarth Councillor Hogarth thanked his colleagues for their support in raising money for the Hospice and the Hospital Foundation. He attended a Council of Councils meeting. He reminded residents that the 2010 Accessibility Awards are scheduled for June 5 and encouraged all to nominate deserving recipients. Councillor Dueck No report Council Minutes May 11, 2010 Page 14 of 14 Councillor Ashlie Councillor Ashlie attended the Ridge Meadows Educational Foundation Annual Fundraising Dinner. She commented on the outstanding performances of students participating in the event. Councillor Ashlie advised that another public art project will be ready for Remembrance Day 2010. 1600 OTHER MATTERS DEEMED EXPEDIENT – Nil 1700 NOTICES OF MOTION AND MATTERS FOR FUTURE MEETINGS – Nil 1800 QUESTIONS FROM THE PUBLIC John McKenzie Mr. McKenzie commented on a newspaper article citing that owners are holding onto properties in the downtown area and he asked whether the District can provide incentives to owners to develop these properties.
