City of Maple Ridge Version January 2016 11995 Haney Place, Maple Ridge, BC V2X 6A9 Tel: 604-467-7341 Inquiries: planning@mapleridge.ca Web Site: www.mapleridge.ca Tree Removal Permits are required for all tree removals including building construction purposes, development activity and large scale clearing; regardless of other permits that are in place. PERMIT PROCESS: 1. Tree Cutting Permit application and fee is submitted to Planning Front Counter. 2. City arborist conducts a site inspection to verify information on the permit and identify replacement tree requirements. 3. City staff contacts applicant if there is any discrepancy or additional requirements. 4. A Permit is issued for the removal of specific tree(s) on the property. 5. A sign must be posted on site 24 hours before, and during, the tree removal. 6. The applicant contacts the City when the work is complete; including planting of replacement trees. 7. City arborist conducts a final inspection to verify work was completed within Permit guidelines. 8. The Tree Cutting Permit is valid for four months. TREES FOR PERMIT: 1. All trees over 20 cm diameter at breast height (DBH); see over for how to measure. 2. Trees on or near property boundaries may require adjacent property owner consent for removal. 3. Trees along perimeters of property, and significant trees (> 50 cm DBH in Urban areas, and >70 cm DBH in rural areas) are expected to be retained except under specific circumstances. 4. Hazard trees must be verified by City Arborist before permitted for removal. 5. Topping of trees is not permitted except in special circumstance and verified by City Arborist. 6. Trees of any size in Conservation Areas cannot be removed or pruned without a Permit. PERMIT REQUIREMENTS: 1. FEE of $200 base fee plus $25 per tree. 2. Tree Service Company that will be retained for removals. The tree company must have a current business license to work in the City of Maple Ridge. 3. If less than 20 trees will be cut an Arborist Report is required (see Bulletin 2016-004-ENV). 4. If more than 20 trees will be cut, a Tree Management Plan is required (see Bulletin 2016-005-ENV) 5. If soils will be exposed in an area greater than 100 square meters as a result of tree removals, an Erosion and Sediment Control plan is required. City of Maple Ridge Version January 2016 11995 Haney Place, Maple Ridge, BC V2X 6A9Tel: 604-467-7341 Web Site: www.mapleridge.ca Inquiries at: planning@mapleridge.ca REPLACEMENT TREES: Replacement Trees are required when the number of trees being retained on the developable portions of the property is less than 16 trees/acre (40 trees/ha) ratio; AND when the trees being removed are significant (>50 cm DBH in Urban areas, and >70 cm DBH in Rural areas). If replacement trees cannot be planted on site, cash-in-lieu of $425 per replacement tree is required. 1. Trees 20-50 cm DBH require 2 replacement trees. 2. Trees 50-70 cm DBH require 4 replacement trees. 3. Trees >70 cm DBH require 6 replacement trees. 4. Refundable security of $425 is required for each replacement tree to be planted on site; returned to applicant after the tree has survived one year. 5. All replacement trees are protected under the Bylaw, no matter what size.
