HomeMy WebLinkAboutCouncil this Week 2014-09-15.pdfDavid Pollock, Municipal Engi-
neer, provided a brief history and
noted that the draft Strategic
Transportation Plan provides a
high level, multi-model, plan that
will allow Council to establish
short and long term priorities for
the City of Maple Ridge. Mr. Pol-
lock noted that the report also
contained cost estimates for the
capital works discussed in the
Plan, and that priorities and more
detailed costs would be estab-
lished as part of the financial
planning work in 2015. He then
introduced the consultant who
has been working on the project
with staff. John Steiner from Ur-
ban Systems, provided Council
with an overview presentation on
the highlights of the draft Strate-
gic Transportation Plan.
Mr. Steiner noted that the Plan
deals with the four major themes
of our transportation network; the
road network, pedestrians, bicy-
cles and transit. There are specif-
ic recommendations in each of
these four areas for both short
and long term connections that
will help citizens move throughout
the community. He walked
through the broad aspects of the
Plan and some of the highlights
of the report.
Council provided a number of
comments and feedback on the
draft and moved that the 2014
draft Strategic Transportation
Plan be finalized and brought for-
ward to a regular Council meeting
for consideration.

Housing Action Plan
Noha Sedky, City Spaces Consulting, presented Council with an overview presentation of the high-
lights of the draft Housing Action Plan. Ms. Sedky took Council through the process used to get to
this final stage of the project timeline and noted that public input throughout the project has been
both critical and gratifying. Ms. Sedky noted that the role of local government in the area of housing
is complex, and that other levels of government are primarily responsible for dealing with some of
the social aspects around the issue of housing, however the City of Maple Ridge can play an im-
portant role in facilitating the conversations and bringing people together to find solutions locally.
She also noted that City policies and regulations can help create an environment where these is-
sues can be addressed. Finally, she noted that the local government here in Maple Ridge together
with other communities, can be important in advocating change to senior levels of government.
Ms. Sedky provided a high level review of the Vision, Key Principles and the Strategy Statements.
Council provided comments and feedback on the report and moved the item to the next regular
Council Meeting for consideration.
