This year, the successful candidates will be serving a four year term for the rst time. All of the candidates had to le their nomination papers by 4:00 pm on Friday, October 10, 2014. They all have one week to decide if they want to continue to stand for of ce meaning that Friday, October 17, 2014 at 4:00 pm the nomination process will be closed and the ballot will be set for Maple Ridge’s 2014 Local Election. That’s where you need to get involved. You will need to decide who you want to represent you as Mayor, on Council and as your School Trustees. We’ve shared a number of ads that talk about the voter turnout in 2011. Only 25% of registered voters cast their ballot. The rst part of our campaign has focused on making sure you and your neighbours know that there’s an election coming. Now our collective goal is to turn the awareness of the upcoming election into action. In the next edition of The News there’s an ad titled ‘Advance Voting Opportunities’ that will tell you where and when the Advance polls are. If you will be out of town on November 15, this is a great time to make an ap- pointment in your calendar for one of the three Advance Polling opportunities on November 1, 5 and 8. Make an appointment with yourself on your smartphone or home computer to vote before you head out of town. Better yet, bring a friend to the polls so we can improve the voter turnout. In addition to the Advance Polls, there’s information on mail ballots in this paper and online with instructions on what you need to do to sign up for that voting option. We will continue to share information, pose questions and keep you informed of the key dates and information regarding “Maple Ridge Election 2014.” In addition to the print ads in this publication and the regular updates in Maple Ridge This Month, we encourage you to check out the 2014 Local Elec- tion page that you can access at mapleridge.ca. This is a great place to start your search for information. We have posted candidate pro les and contact information. Everything you need to know about where and when to vote is also online. We will be doing posts on social media on the City of Maple Ridge Facebook and Twitter pages using the hashtag #MRElection2014 for our messag- ing. We need you to get involved in the conversation. You need to read the local papers, go to the all candidates meetings and be proac- tive in seeking information on the men and women who have stepped forward to stand for of ce. This election is important. All around the world people wish they had the right to vote. 25% of you understand that already, we are asking the other 75% to ‘step it up!’ Be engaged. Be a voter. SPOTLIGHT ON: 2014 Maple Ridge Election Election Day is Saturday, November 15, 2014. Who are you voting for? INFORMED: Fall Brush Chipping Program ENGAGED: ShakeOut BC October 16, 2014 at 10:16 am On Thursday, October 16 at 10:16 am City staff will join millions of people around the world as part of an earthquake awareness program called ShakeOut. The City encourages all businesses to participate in this event. It’s easy to register on the ShakeOut BC website: www.shakeoutbc.ca. The website is lled with great information and links to help organize your participation at home and in the workplace. The critical thing to do in an earthquake is to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” Here’s a breakdown of the three steps for the exercise: 1) Drop, Cover, and Hold On: ‘Drop’ to the ground, take ‘Cover’ under a table or desk and ‘Hold On’ to it as if a major earthquake were happening. Remain in this position for at least 60 seconds. Practice now so you will know what to do to protect yourself during an actual earthquake! 2) While still under the table, or wherever you are, look around and imagine what would happen during a major earthquake. What could fall on you or someone else? What could become damaged? What would life be like after? 3) Finally, practice what you will do after the shaking stops. Do you have a communications plan for your family? Do you have a ‘Grab and Go’ bag at the of ce and a Survival Kit at home? Here are some links to allow you to get more information and make sure you and your family are prepared. The City’s Emergency Services page is located at mapleridge.ca/ep. One of the best sites is shakeoutbc.ca. This year we are adding a step to the ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ message. Take a photo of yourself practicing Drop, Cover, Hold On and send your #ShakeOutSel e to @YourMapleRidge on Twitter to win prizes. We will do a random draw from the participants later this week.
