We’ve published a lot of ads encouraging citizens to ‘Be
Engaged. Be A Voter’ in the last few weeks. You’ve seen the
signs pop up on street corners and the local newspapers are
fi lled with ads and stories about all of the men and women
who have stepped forward to run for the offi ces of Mayor,
Council and School Trustee.
Starting tomorrow, November 1, 2014 the voting starts. The fi rst
Advance Polling day will commence at two locations. The Ridge
Meadows Seniors Centre located at 12150 224 Street and the
Fraserview Village Small Hall located at 22610 116 Avenue
will be open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm for you to cast your
ballot. There is an ad in this edition of The News that details
the locations and times for the Advance Polls on Wednesday,
November 5 and Saturday, November 8.
In addition to the ads in this newspaper, we have published
complete information about Advance Voting, Voting
Registration, Voting Locations, Candidate Profi les and Contact
Information plus we’ve even created four short videos to help
introduce you to the process of casting a ballot.
The image with this article is from an ad that we published
on Wednesday asking you to help us write the fi nal ad in our
campaign to encourage greater participation at the polls. We’re
asking citizens to answer the question ‘Why Do You Vote?’ by
sending us a brief note to election@mapleridge.ca or posting a
short answer on the City Facebook and Twitter pages using the
hashtag #WhyDoYouVote? We will go through your submissions
and select a number of the best responses to be the fi nal ad in
our campaign. Don’t be a partisan for your favourite candidate
or use clichés – speak from your heart. This is your chance to
convince your neighbours to ‘Be engaged. Be a voter.’
Here we go, in two weeks it’s Election Day in Maple Ridge.
Mark your calendar – November 15 we will all elect our Mayor,
Council and School Trustees for a four-year term.

INFORMED:
Look. Listen. Be Seen.
Dark Evenings and Rain
Make it Tough to be Seen
Our friends at ICBC have been working with the Ridge Mead-
ows RCMP to create awareness about the need for pedestrians
to be extra careful at this time of year with the slogan ‘Look.
Listen & Be Seen.’ The City has jumped on board, and given
that this is the weekend we change our clocks back one hour
on Saturday night, there’s no better time to remind folks that
it will be darker in the late afternoon now, and we all need to
step up and be responsible drivers and pedestrians.
This graphic is being placed on some key uncontrolled pedes-
trian crossings to provide pedestrians with tips to increase
their safety. Things like making eye contact with drivers,
wearing bright refl ective clothing and not being distracted by
texting and music may
seem like common sense,
but they are often one of
the causes of pedestrian
accidents.
Rain and fog, common
weather this time of year,
compound the problem.
Parents, make sure your
children ‘Look. Listen &
Be Seen.’ You can model
this behaviour by wearing
bright clothing yourself.
Together we can help
make sure that drivers and
pedestrians respect each
other.
