Family Day in BC
There’s a Long Weekend
Coming: Let’s Get Active!
It used to be that you had to wait until March or April to get
a long weekend but in BC Family Day breaks up that long
stretch with a wonderful opportunity to spend some quality
time with the whole family. Regionally there are a number
of great programs to encourage you to get out and explore
numerous activities with your family and right here in Maple
Ridge the team at Parks & Leisure Services have some great
ideas to make Monday, February 9 the best ‘Family Day’ ever.
Activities include FREE swimming activities, a special LOONIE
skate time, a family yoga session for a dollar and a lantern
making class at the ACT. This year you can get the family off
the couch and away from the ‘screens’ with any one of these
great programs.
For more information go to mapleridge.ca and click on the
green Parks and Leisure button on the right hand corner of
the page. It’s your portal to great activities every day!

The Community Heritage Commission has been working with
the Maple Ridge Museum and Archives and the Maple Ridge
Historical Society to present a number of events that will allow
citizens to immerse themselves in the rich history of Maple
Ridge.
Events include a webinar titled ‘Using Heritage to Build
Dynamic Downtowns’ that will be held on Wednesday,
Feburary 18 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Blaney Room at
City Hall. Attendance is free, however seating is limited. Please
contact Sunny Schiller at 604-463-5221 or email sschiller@
mapleridge.ca to reserve your seat.
The next evening, on Thursday, February 19, is the Annual
Heritage Awards evening at St. Andrews Heritage Church Hall
located at 22279 116 Avenue just a stone’s throw from Port
Haney. The event starts at 7:00 pm and will feature a drama
presentation by the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society. Please
RSVP by Thursday, February 12 to Lisa Zosiak at the Maple
Ridge Planning Department 604-467-7383 or lzosiak@
mapleridge.ca if you are going to attend.
On Saturday, February 21 the Maple Ridge Historical Society is
running Heritage Walking Tours from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm.
The one hour tours start at the Memorial Peace Park fountain
on 224 Street and are limited to 15 people. Participants will
receive a booklet with a map of the tour’s highlights. Contact
the Maple Ridge Museum for more details and to register.
604-463-5311 or mrmuseum@gmail.com.
The fi nal presentation is called ‘Local Voices at Maple Ridge
Library’ and runs on Wednesday, February 25 from 7:00 to
8:30 pm. There will be three speakers including Sheila Nickols,
Maple Ridge Historical Society mentor and author of new book
‘Looking Back’.
As you can see, there are lots of ways you can connect with the
history of our community. We may be BC’s newest City, but the
reality is that Maple Ridge is BC’s sixth oldest community and
there are many amazing stories to be told!
On Monday, February 2, representatives of TransLink will be appearing before Council as
part of the Workshop agenda. Given the interest in the TransLink Funding Referendum and
the associated 10 Year Plan, Council has moved the meeting to Council Chambers to allow
for more public seating and the capacity to live stream the meeting for the public.
The referendum will be conducted using mail ballots that will be sent out in March of
2015 and citizens across Metro Vancouver will determine if the proposed 0.5% sales tax
will be used to fund the TransLink plan. This is a great opportunity to get educated on this
important issue live or via the live stream.
Mayor Read Launches
Monthly Blog
On Wednesday, February 4, a
new link will go live on the home
page of mapleridge.ca titled
‘Your Mayor’ which will take you
to a landing page that allows
you to connect with Mayor Read
in a number of different ways.
You can follow her on social
media feeds like Facebook and
Twitter or check out her monthly
blog and ‘Quick Thoughts’ to
keep up with the work your
newly elected Council is working
on.
The monthly updates were a commitment that Mayor Read
made as part of her Inaugural Address in early December.
The blog will be one of the ways to report back to citizens on
initiatives that are underway and report progress on important
issues facing the community. Mayor Read will be asking
members of the community, fellow Council members or people
with specifi c expertise to ‘guest blog’ from time-to-time so that
we can create a strong dialogue and establish the openness
and transparency that all of Council aspires to.
The ‘Your Mayor’ link will appear right underneath the ‘Your
Council’ link on the left hand side of the home page. Take a
look and get engaged in your City Hall!
