Volunteering in the community is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and get involved in your community. For young citizens volunteering can help you fi nd your passion and demonstrate leadership as you build your resume for post-secondary education or employment. A great place to start your volunteer journey is by visiting mrpmparksandleisure. ca/290 to learn how you can connect with volunteer opportunities with Parks & Leisure services or with other organizations in the community through Volunteer Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. The website has a three-step process that will allow you to identify areas of interest, create your volunteer profi le and set up an interview with a member of our staff to connect you with volunteer opportunities. Volunteer Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows can help you connect with one of the many non-profi t organizations in the community who could use your expertise. Spring is here and the recent run of nice weather is a reminder that there will be a ton of summer festivals and community events that will be looking for volunteers. Get engaged in Maple Ridge and become a volunteer! SPOTLIGHT ON: Earth Day 2016 The 2016 Festival Season begins – mark your calendar The annual Earth Day Celebration in Maple Ridge kicks off at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 23 at Memorial Peace Park, with the theme “ENERGY!” We are looking forward to highlighting energy in its many forms – from renewable energy to what inspires and recharges us in our day-to-day lives. Earth Day favourites from past years will be back, including HUB’s Cycle Recycle Free Bike Draw, lots of kids’ crafts, electric vehicles courtesy of VEVA, roving entertainers and fl ash mobs and, of course, the popular Family Freecycle, where gently used books, toys and clothes will be available for free to the public at the Greg Moore Youth Centre. This is also the fi rst appearance of the Haney Farmers Market for 2016. They are an important part of the Earth Day celebration not only because supporting local farmers is great for the environment, it just tastes great. The fresh fruits and vegetables, local baking and preserves are an amazing addition to your family’s dinner table. We all love to get reacquainted with the vendors who will serve us from May through to October. Come on out with the whole family and celebrate Earth Day in Maple Ridge. Get involved, get engaged and get educated on some of the amazing initiatives in our community to help us live a more sustainable life.
