SEPTEMBER 2016
INFORMED: Back to School
School Zone Enforcement in Effect
School is back on Tuesday, September 6 and the RCMP and
Speed Watch Volunteers will be out and very active over the
next couple of weeks. Drivers and cyclists need to be vigilant of
pedestrians in the morning and afternoon in school zones as
the crosswalks will be fi lled with children and parents on their
way to and from school.
The RCMP will be moving throughout the community and doing
enforcement in the school zones to ensure that drivers get the
message that school speed zones are in effect. In addition,
citizens in rural areas are reminded to respect school bus
operations both in the morning and afternoon. Do not pass
school buses that are loading and unloading students.
This is a great time to talk to your children and remind them to
be attentive when they are walking to and from school. As we
move into fall the importance of bright and refl ective clothing
for pedestrians is critical, especially in the morning when
sunrise happens later.
The start of a new school year is an exciting time and together
we can keep our children safe as they begin this adventure.
ENGAGED: Upcoming Community Events
September Events for the Whole Family
There are a number of events happening in our community
during September including GETI Fest, Port Haney Day, Rivers
Day, Katzie Cultural Day as well as a number of charity events.
The Haney Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 9:00 am
until 2:00 pm in Memorial Peace Park and on September17
GETI Fest will be co-located in the park for an event that runs
from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. GETI is an acronym for the
Golden Ears Transition Initiative which seeks to support citizen
action toward reducing oil dependence and building local
community resilience and ecological sustainability. The event
is always fi lled with displays, workshops, music and dance that
help citizens become engaged in this initiative.
Check the Community Calendar at mapleridge.ca for times,
locations and details of other events during the month of
September. The Terry Fox Run and the Cops for Cancer charity
events are a good way to contribute your time and money
to great causes. Rivers Day is a celebration of the bounty of
nature we have here in Maple Ridge. Look for more details
online. The kids are back to school but the community events
keep rolling along.
INFORMED: Stay Informed on Construction Projects
Get in the Loop on Your Route
There are a number of construction projects that are underway
in our community where work will continue into the Fall. The
expansion of 128 Avenue/Abernethy Way is proceeding on
schedule. A one week closure in August allowed the contractor
to install culverts under the roadway to protect salmon bearing
streams. As the project moves to completion there will be
a shift of lane locations to allow for paving before the full
roadway is opened later this year.
The work on 203 Street north of Dewdney Trunk Road is also
hitting some important milestones. The portion south of 123
Avenue got a fi rst layer of new asphalt and the scope of
the project is now emerging. Work to complete the concrete
sidewalks on this section will continue as will large scale work
north of 123 Avenue.
In addition to these large projects there is a long list of
projects to maintain our water, sewer and drainage systems as
well as road maintenance. Many of these projects are weather
dependent, so the call is made either the day before or fi rst
thing in the morning.
You can get emailed updates on any construction projects or
have them sent to your smart phone by signing up using the
‘Notify Me’ link at mapleridge.ca. Get in the loop on any work
happening on your route! Sign up today and make sure you
look for notifi cations on our City Facebook and Twitter pages.
