MID-MONTH OCTOBER 2016 INFORMED: Fire Prevention Week Bring the Family to Our Open House This Saturday! One of the most important messages the Maple Ridge Fire Department wants to communicate is that your smoke alarms are a critical part of your family’s safety. In addition to ensuring that the batteries are changed and your existing smoke alarms are tested they are asking an important question. Is it time for your smoke alarm to retire? Sparky reminds everyone that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years, and demonstrates how to fi nd out the age of an alarm. This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is, “Don’t Wait - Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.” Fire Prevention Week ends on Saturday, October 15 with an Open House at Fire Hall No. 1 located at 22708 Brown Avenue from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm. It’s a great opportunity to bring the kids to see the equipment our fi refi ghters use for fi re suppression and rescue. There’s even a small obstacle course for young kids who aspire to be a fi refi ghter one day. Bring your sons and daughters; in fact bring the whole family, for this great FREE Open House. Look for details at www.mapleridge.ca/430. INFORMED: Greg Moore Youth Centre Anniversary INFORMED: Stormy Weather Tips A Couple of Things You Can Do Around Your Home On Saturday, October 15, the Greg Moore Youth Centre (GMYC) will hold a 15th Birthday celebration and you are invited to be part of the continuing legacy of this facility. The celebration will run from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm with a special protocol ceremony at noon where local dignitaries and extraordinary citizens will share a few words. This is a great opportunity for young families to come down and connect with the amazing staff and youth mentors to learn how this place has changed lives. Many of the alumni of the facility will be on hand to share their memories of how the GMYC has been a part of their past and how it helped launch them to a bright future. Staff and volunteers will be offering tours and there will be fun activities running throughout the event. And, of course, there will be cake – it IS a Maple Ridge celebration! We look forward to seeing you at this special anniversary event. The forecast this week called for wind and rain and with leaves falling from the trees we can have some challenges around our homes. First, make sure your gutters are clear of debris. One of the most common causes of fl ooding is when water backs up in your gutters and starts pouring around the foundation. Make sure they are clear throughout the fall and winter. When you are doing lawn maintenance please do not use the leaf blower to blow the leaves onto the street. Rake them up and bag them along with your green waste or compost them. Those leaves can clog the storm sewers and catch basins and cause fl ooding and large puddles on the road. If you have a storm drain or catch basin near your home please check it for debris and report any large blockages to the Operations Centre at 604- 463-9581. Some quick tips to stay dry this winter!
