Maple Ridge This Month
MID-MONTH FEBRUARY 2017
INFORMED: What’s Happening In Your City
Subscribe to Maple Ridge This Week
As part of the ongoing work to implement recommendations
from the City’s Open Government Task Force we are pleased to
introduce a new online newsletter titled ‘Maple Ridge This Week.’
This electronic newsletter showcases the work that goes on
within the City of Maple Ridge. This is a very diverse organization
and on any given day our staff are teaching swim lessons or out
doing snow removal in the middle of the night. In fact when you
consider the work of our fi rst responders from the Maple Ridge
Fire Department and the men and women of the Ridge Meadows
RCMP, the City of Maple Ridge is a 24/7 operation. This newsletter
will introduce you to some of the members of our team who are
working on your behalf. We will highlight upcoming meetings
and community events, share stories of staff members who have
been recognized for their work and try to give you a sense of the
work that happens as we operate through the changing seasons.
You can subscribe to this newsletter by using the ‘Notify Me’ link
on the homepage of the City website at mapleridge.ca. The vast
majority of City staff members live in the community and are your
neighbours. We are proud to share their stories.

On Saturday, February 18, 2017 an Oral History Workshop will be
held in the Blaney Room at City Hall. Pre-registration is required and
there’s a $20 fee to cover the lunch during the workshop.

INFORMED: Are You Speeding?
City, Police and ICBC Partnering to Make Maple Ridge
Roads Safer
The City of Maple Ridge, ICBC and Ridge Meadows RCMP have
partnered together to install speed reader boards at seven
locations across the City. Aggressive driving is a problem in all of
these locations. Ridge Meadows RCMP have noticed a dramatic
rise in the number of drivers charged with excessive speeding
(travelling at more than 40 km/h above a posted speed limit).
“In 2016 a total of 565 drivers were charged and their vehicles
were automatically impounded for one week,” said Sergeant Bruce
McCowan, Ridge Meadows RCMP Traffi c Services Supervisor.
“Speed, disobeying traffi c lights and signs, following too close
and illegal lane changes all contribute to aggressive driving, which
frequently results in crashes. Speed reader boards make drivers
more aware of their speed, and encourage them to slow down to
avoid crashes with other vehicles or pedestrians. This is all aimed
at reducing harm on our roads.”
Speed reader board locations are:
• Lougheed Highway in the 23000 block (both west & east)
• Dewdney Trunk Road at Dover Street
• 240 Street in the 11800 block
• 232 Street at 122 Avenue
• 128 Avenue just west of Laity Street
• 128 Avenue in the 22000 block
“ICBC is pleased to invest in new speed reader boards to help
reduce crashes in Maple Ridge,” said Kate Woochuk, local ICBC
road safety coordinator. “They’re a valuable awareness tool to
encourage drivers to slow down and reduce their risk of crashing.
Fewer crashes and injuries also help keep rates as low as possible.”
”All of us on Council get phone calls and emails about people
driving at excessive speeds in neighbourhoods throughout the
community. This program is a great partnership to educate us on
our behaviours behind the wheel. This is a community fi lled with
young families and we all need to slow down and drive safely and
responsibly,” said Mayor Nicole Read.
“In the end the goal is to keep people who live and work in Maple
Ridge safe as they go about their daily life. Whether that is going
to or from work, school, or going for a walk,” said Inspector Jennifer
Hyland, Ridge Meadows RCMP Operations Offi cer.

In December of 2016 The ‘Community Facilities Conversation’ kicked
off with the development of the webpage mapleridge.ca/1676
outlining eight different proposals for future parks, recreation and
cultural facilities that were identifi ed in the Parks Master Plan that
was adopted in 2009. There are ‘pop up displays’ at the south
entrance of the Business Tower by Service BC, the Maple Ridge
Public Library, the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and Planet Ice with
information boards and survey forms so you can share your views on
these proposals. The same survey can be fi lled out online at survey-
monkey.com/r/Facility_Talk_Open_Feedback. We encourage you to
take a look at the printable information sheets and videos and get
connected with this project.
3000 invitations have been mailed to randomly selected households
to participate in a survey that will seek public input and comments
on the proposed projects, priorities for the development of parks,
recreation and culture facilities and discuss various funding alterna-
tives. If your household received one of these letters we would like to
encourage you to take a few moments from your busy day to share
your opinions at www2.madebasic.ca/mapleridge.html.
In the upcoming months there will be more ‘pop up displays, face-
to-face surveys, online interactions, an open house and community
café to share the preliminary information. We hope you will be part
of the Community Facilities Conversation and help shape the future
of Maple Ridge.
