SPOTLIGHT ON: City Lends a Helping Hand
Supporting Evacuated Residents of Interior BC
Wild res in the province over the last week have had a signi cant
impact on families in British Columbia. As of the date of this
release 14,000 people have been forced from their homes and
over 10,000 more are on an evacuation alert. Many families in
Maple Ridge have loved ones in these areas and citizens have
reached out to the City to nd out how they can help.
In response to the compassionate desire of our community to
assist, the City of Maple Ridge has organized a number of ways for
citizens to make nancial donations, which is the most valuable
way to donate at this time.
• The following link https://goo.gl/jBferc has been added to the
City’s website for donations to the Canadian Red Cross.
• An account has been set up at the Finance counter at City Hall,
11995 Haney Place, Maple Ridge, BC.
• Funds are being collected at special events throughout the
City including; Hot Summer Nights in Tolmie Park, 20260 Lorne
Avenue, Maple Ridge, BC on Thursday, July 13, after 6:30 pm and
our Maple Ridge re ghters will be hosting a BBQ, for donations
on Saturday, July 15 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in Memorial
Peace Park. Join them for water fun, a kid’s re ghter obstacle
course and more!
• An account is also being set up at TD Canada Trust at Valley Fair
Mall, 560-22709 Lougheed Highway, Maple Ridge, BC.
We ask if people want to donate household goods or clothing they
should hold on to them until a request is made for these items.
Right now the focus is on nancially supporting those assisting
residents that have been evacuated.
Mayor Nicole Read has reached out to mayors in the affected
areas to express the City’s support. “Living as we do in a heavily
forested area, one day this could be our community. Just as
important as the donations is the message of camaraderie, and
support to our friends in communities in the Interior who are
impacted by these res.”
Thank you to everyone assisting with the BC Wild res; from
frontline re ghters and volunteers to those who are able to make
a nancial contribution to the Canadian Red Cross.
You may have seen the social
media posts from Metro
Vancouver with facts about water
use and water conservation.
Living on the coast, and dealing
with eight months of rain gives us
a bit of a false sense of security
around an endless supply of
treated water. While Metro
Vancouver has a strong regional water distribution system, these
long, hot summers can have a huge impact on the available water
in our reservoir system.
Sprinkling Regulations have been in effect since May 15; however
we received good rainfalls in May and June that made sprinkling
your lawn unnecessary. Now that we’ve had some hot, dry weather
it’s time to up your water game. Go to mapleridge.ca/375 to learn
more about Sprinkling Regulations.
Metro Vancouver has great resources and information on water
conservation that will help you learn more about our regional water
distribution system. Go to metrovancouver.org/welovewater.
Here are the speci c regulations that are in effect:
Residential Addresses:
• Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns from
4:00 - 9:00 am Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
• Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawnsfrom
4:00 - 9:00 amTuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
Non- Residential Addresses:
• Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns
from 1:00 - 6:00 am Monday and Wednesday.
• Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns
from 1:00 - 6:00 amTuesday and Thursday
• All non-residential addresses can also sprinkle from
4:00 - 9:00 amFriday.
• Newly turfed or seeded lawns may be sprinkled more frequently,
provided a permit is rst obtained from the Engineering
Department (with proof of seed/sod purchase). The cost of the
permit is $30.00 for a three week period and is renewable once.
Noti cations will be sent out via the City website and social media
channels if water restrictions elevate due to an extended dry spell.
Please do your part to conserve water this year.

INFORMED: Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes
Making Healthy Living Fun and Accessible for All
Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes offer parents and
caregivers new ideas on how to play with their
kids, supply the necessary games and sports
equipment and provide unlimited access and
opportunity for families to get outdoors and
engage with other families through active play.
Playboxes help enhance environments and
remove barriers to access for active outdoor
play, as well as foster social connectedness.
These Playboxes are new to Maple Ridge and were made possible
by the generous support of Scope BC, Canadian Heritage
and the City of Maple Ridge. The box itself contains sports
equipment that is free for community use at local parks. For
more information about how to gain access to a Playbox email
playbox@mapleridge.ca.
In addition to the Playbox located in Memorial
Peace Park, Maple Ridge Park now hosts
a second Playbox, complemented by the
Play Nights in the Park program (July 12 -
August 30; 6:30 - 8:00 pm). The success
of this project will depend on community
involvement.Residents of Maple Ridge and
local organizations can play a role by helping
monitor the boxes, contributing to the purchase
of new equipment through nancial or in-kind support and hosting
a Play Night in the Park program to help encourage active play with
children. If you or your organization is interested in any of these
opportunities, please contact Jen Baillie, Children’s Programmer at
jbaillie@mapleridge.ca or 604-466-4339.
