INFORMED: Back to School
School Zone Enforcement in Effect
School is back on Tuesday, September 5.
The RCMP and Speed Watch volunteers will
be out and very active over the next couple
of weeks. Drivers and cyclists need to be
vigilant of pedestrians in the morning and
afternoon in school zones as the crosswalks
will be lled with children and parents.
The RCMP will be moving throughout the
community and doing enforcement to
ensure that drivers get the message that
school speed zones are in effect. In addition, citizens in rural
areas are reminded to respect school bus operations at all
times. Do not pass school buses that are
loading and unloading students.
This is a great time to talk to your children
and remind them to be attentive when
they are walking to and from school. As we
move into Fall the importance of bright and
re ective clothing for pedestrians is critical,
especially in the morning when sunrise
happens later.
The start of a new school year is an exciting
time and together we can keep our children safe as they
begin this adventure.

There are a number of events happening in
our community during September including
GETI Fest, Port Haney Day, Rivers Day and
a number of charity events.
The Haney Farmers Market runs every
Saturday from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm in
Memorial Peace Park and on September
16 GETI Fest will be co-located in the
park for an event that runs from 10:00
am until 3:00 pm. GETI is an acronym for
the Golden Ears Transition Initiative which seeks to support
citizen action toward reducing oil dependence and building
local community resilience and ecological sustainability.
The event is always lled with displays,
workshops, music and dance that help
citizens become engaged in this initiative.
Check the Community Calendar at
mapleridge.ca for times, locations and
details of other events during the month of
September. The Terry Fox Run and the Cops
for Cancer charity events are a good way
to contribute your time and money to great
causes. Rivers Day is a celebration of the bounty of nature
we have here in Maple Ridge. The kids are back to school, but
the community events keep rolling along.

Open House on the Proposed Outdoor Pool
On Tuesday, September 12 the City of
Maple Ridge is hosting an Open House at
Thomas Haney Secondary School located
at 23000 116 Ave, Maple Ridge. The Open
House will run from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
and City staff will be on hand with concept
site plans and designs for a proposed
outdoor pool located east of Thomas Haney adjacent to the
Maple Ridge Lawn Bowling facility.
This is an opportunity to view the proposal,
site plan and designs and ask questions
of the staff who are hosting the event. We
will be asking for written feedback at the
Open House or via the City website where
information will be posted. Your feedback
will be part of the future reports that are
delivered to Council as this concept moves
forward for further review. Thank you for taking the time to be
part of this Open House.
ENGAGED: Home Based Business Review
Help Maple Ridge Become a Leader in Home Based
Business
The City of Maple Ridge recognized that Home Based
businesses are an important part of the economic prosperity
of our community. We have all heard how Apple computers
started in a garage, and the next corporation may be
incubating in a home in our community. The City of Maple
Ridge’s Planning and Economic Development departments
are teaming up to do a review of the current bylaws around
Home Based business.
A web page has been created at mapleridge.ca/1137 with
information on the public consultation and some of the
objectives of the review. On Saturday, September 9 there will
be an information booth at the Haney Farmers Market where
you can learn more about this community consultation and
provide feedback on the proposals. There is an Open House
scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 in the Fraser Room
of the Maple Ridge Public Library (second oor). The drop in
style Open House will run from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm and
you will be able to view information and ask questions of the
staff hosting the event. We will be asking for written feedback
on the proposals that will be included in future reports that
will come before Council.
There are a number of other ways that we will be connecting
with the business community, and we encourage Home
Based business owners and operators to check out the
webpage link and join in this important discussion. This is an
integral part of the overall economy of our community.
